BUS & SUBWAY One of the best deals for getting around is the one-day or one-week flat-rate
MetroCard, which entitles you ride as many subway trains and buses as you like during that fixed period of time. Just note: you can only buy the one-day MetroCard from a ticket machine, not from a token booth clerk. Lots of travellers bring their own pocket-size subway maps, but do check that your map is up-to-date; these pocket maps are notoriously inaccurate. What's more, free subway and bus maps are available in subway stations and on some buses! Of course, you can
download them as well. Note: There are frequent subway
schedule changes, and these are usually posted in affected subway stations. Fun fact: Did you know New York City has the only subway in the world that operates 24 hours a day?
WALKING & BIKING Two great New York activities! Occasionally you can find free bicycles for hire in summer, but the agencies providing cycles tend not to advertise. New York City's beaches are not as pristine as those on Long Island, but if you want a cheap suntan, head to the parks along the Hudson River between 14th Street and lower Manhattan, where you'll find ample lawns and piers suitable for getting a sun tan.
