The legendary Gem Spa sits like a jewel at the corner of Second Avenue and St Marks Place, a leftover from yesteryear when the newsstand was the neighborhood's focal point and the egg cream was king. The dizzying array of newspapers, magazines, cigarettes, gum and candy are augmented by the amusing gentlemen who work behind the counter, who probably have seen every possible variety of human life pass through their doors.
