A theater-district hotel since 1904, the Portland Square is a budget oasis amidst busy Times Square. Ideally situated for theatergoers on a budget, the hotel is decorated with Broadway photographs and other memorabilia of the 1920s and 1930s. The rooms are on the small side, even by New York standards, and some do not have their own bathroom. The hotel is also badly in need of a renovation. However, if you are in town to see a Broadway play, and can handle roughing it a bit, the Portland does offer a great location at a price that will be hard to beat for a central Midtown location. One plus for travelers with laptops is the hotel offers a free wifi connection.
