Union Square Park has morphed over the past decade or so from a somewhat dangerous heroin lovers hangout to a relatively safe shoppers hangout. Still a popular venue for free speech and ad hoc demonstrations, Union Square is also a commercial center, with the Green Market days year round and the winter Holiday Village during the madcap Christmas season. A nexus for the cross-town L subway line, the eastside’s 4-5-6 and those crazy N-R-Q-W lines (these are changeling lines, so always read the map), Union Square is now home to Mega Shopping.
