Fung Wah has come into the spotlight for their low safety record and bus crashes in 2005 and 2006. While you save big bucks by taking the Chinatown bus, you are possibly jeopardizing your safety by using this bus service. Drivers have been cited for speeding, and the federal government is investigating whether drivers were working too many hours and are even qualified. A WNYC Radio report in September 2005 about Fung Wah revealed that the company routinely ignores safety standards and is unresponsive to federal inquiries about their level of service. In September 2006, a speeding bus flipped on its side while taking a curve on Interstate 290 in Connecticut. New York senator Chuck Schumer has raised repeated questions about oversight of these new Chinatown bus services, which have not been subject to the level of scrutiny of traditional bus lines such as Greyhound. The reporter asked: "Is there an acceptable gamble between low cost and safety?" We suggest you carefully consider all your options before travelling.
