Zabars is fine and Barney Greengrass has tables but the best nova, sturgeon, kippered salmon, whitefish and pickled herring can be found at Murray's. Try to enjoy the time it takes to shop there. These guys are careful, slicing everything to order, encouraging tastes.
I must admit Murrays is not as perfect as it once was (I have been shopping there for almost forty years) but you can still experience the old world perfectionism in the small shop.
I recommend: a toasted sesame seed bagel, thin shmear of cream cheese, 1/8 lb nova, 2 slices of sturgeon. Get the ingredients at Murray's and a...
