The MetLife Tower (or MetLife Building, although it shares that moniker with its uptown brother—the former PanAm Building—at 200 Park Ave) is one of the few buildings that seems to remain in sight no matter where you go, like the eyes of a painting. Whereas the Empire State Building should be omnipresent, this art deco tower isn't recognizable to most travelers and yet—like the Woolworth Building—always seems somewhat inescapable. It looms over Madison Square Park and the nearly art deco Shake Shack. Also, a recent renovation has added the same lighting capabilities as the Empire State Building to the top of the MetLife Tower, allowing it to indicate—colorfully, of course—upcoming holidays and events.
