One of the first Long Island settlements, Flushing has a long-standing historic status in the borough of Queens. The scenic Flushing Meadows-Corona Park was the site of the 1939 and 1964 World's Fairs and retains the iconic Unisphere constructed for the latter event, as well as 20th century time capsules buried in 1938 and 1965 that were intended to be opened in a short 5,000 years. The neighborhood has been home to a wealth of musicians, rappers, writers, and artists throughout the years, and retains the ethnic flavor of the many immigrant populations that made their homes there throughout the last two centuries.
