Gotham Bar and Grill first opened its doors in 1984 along a tree-lined stretch in the heart of the city’s fabled Greenwich Village neighborhood. In 1985, Chef Alfred Portale took the reins at the young Greenwich Village restaurant. His idea was to bring fine dining downtown, both in terms of cuisine and style. Portale wanted to create a restaurant that emulated the standards of the 3-Star Michelin restaurants from his time in France with Jacques Maximin and the Troisgros brothers. At Gotham, Portale developed a seasonal menu with an American sensibility: relaxed elegance, prime product and bold flavors. Portale’s dedication to sourcing quality ingredients from small farms and specialty purveyors placed him among those chefs who are identified as the leaders of the movement known as New American Cuisine. This movement, now emulated across the country, marked a return to the simple pleasures of quality ingredients fused with French technique and international influence. The restaurant’s wine program has evolved over the years, earning the respect of many top wine makers, who share rare and hard-to-obtain vintages and small production wines. The result is a vast and varied cellar making Gotham Bar and Grill an essential wine destination.
At Gotham for 28 years now, Portale has continued to transform haute cuisine, making it vibrant, contemporary and relaxed. Gotham is the only restaurant to have received five consecutive three-star reviews from the New York Times, and in 2009 was named one of the most important New York City restaurants of the past forty years by New York Magazine. Additionally, the restaurant won the prestigious James Beard Foundation Award as Outstanding Restaurant in the nation in 2002, and Chef Portale was named Outstanding Chef in the nation in 2006. The restaurant also holds one Michelin star and is perched high atop the Most Popular Restaurant List in the annual Zagat Survey, ranking in the top ten for more than a decade; in the 2009 Survey, Gotham weighed in as the fifth most popular restaurant in the City.In addition to the consistent quality of food and service, Gotham’s uncommon longevity can be attributed to the tireless efforts of the restaurant’s team who periodically update the dining room, menu covers, and art collection (Gotham contracts its own curator) so that it remains always vibrant and ever-current.
The ideal spot for any occasion, Gotham Bar and Grill serves dinner seven nights a week, and serves lunch Monday through Friday, when the room is awash in bright sunlight, and the restaurant offers its legendary prix fixe lunch menu, an institution unto itself and one of New York City’s great values.
