Chef Martin Brock, a protégée of the duly celebrated Chef Gray Kunz, has launched his own restaurant in the former space of Kunz's own Grayz Restaurant.
Atria is sumptuous, and it should be. Located in a former townhouse residence of John D. Rockefeller, this Modern European restaurant can boast a visually stunning interior and a finely-tuned menu. Overhead in the main dining room, guests can marvel at the installation by Shaun Acton while perusing the noteworthy wine list.
The upstairs bar and lounge area, slightly less formal than the dining room, has a more casual menu. The cocktail list pays homage to gin.
On the menu are dishes that reflect the long culinary traditions and lofty aspirations of continental Europe. Chef Brock lets his Bavarian roots, French technique and New York muscles show. He has to, of course; after all, he has opened a restaurant in the failed footsteps of his mentor. That bold move is vindicated, though, in selections from the appetizer menu like an unbelievable lobster ravioli and in entrees that are unrelentingly satisfying, deliciously huge ordeals.
Expect a gracious space with first-class service staff and expertly-prepared dishes. From cassoulet to schupfnudeln to yakitori, the fare here is destined to become a jewel on the New York City crown.
