Broadway Boogie-Woogie
Pros: unparalleled the world over
Cons: frightfully crowded
I think of Mondrian's famous painting at MoMA whenever I think of Times Square: it's Broadway Boogie-Woogie all the time. Endless excitement, pulsating lights, vibrant energy, full of annoyances and tourists packing every sidewalk. It's so many superlatives all at once. I kind of miss the bad old days of porno theaters and derelict buildings. Although everything is shiny and new, it's a hodgepodge of 21st century styles, none of which is particularly brilliant or appealing. But change is inevitable, so onward march. Tip: visit on a Sunday morning, when only the sleeping drunks are around, and all is still and quiet.
