Few places in New York have elicited such emotion in recent years as the famed Plaza Hotel, which anyone who has stayed there in recent years can tell you has seen better days. Ronald Lauder himself flew to Israel to negotiate with the new owners, to save the plaza "from being transformed into another gaudy bazaar." While I doubt that would be the case, there are numerous landmark-worthy features worthy of preservation. But clearly new owner Elad Properties' goal was to break the backs of the mighty union members who worked there, most of whom could not be said to be exactly the most efficient or charming of those normally found in five-star hotellerie. image credit: Museum of the City of New York
