Mo's is a smokin' venue where anything goes!!

Pros: Warm, welcoming, cool, comfortable, good service
Cons: I wish the Anti-Slam had an earlier slot

The retro cool facade with Mo Pitkins' signature scrawled across Ave A in Neon on Black is a welcoming beacon to this wonderful venue.  Dark and rich interiors are drawn from somewhere between the Borscht Belt and 50's Vegas Lounge. The back lounge has red velvety curtains across the door and behind the stage.  Despite being a relatively narrow room, the stage is situated close to the center. Comfortable banquets all have a decent view. (perhaps the one booth near the front has an obstructed view.)  Cheesy portraits around walls and frosted deco lighting make you feel welcome, and so does the staff.
I was there for the opening night of Rev. Jen's Anti-Slam at Mo's. And we couldn't have felt more at home.  No pressure to by the minimum, cheap beer or good beer if you prefer, low cover charge, and friendly service staff all added up for a great experience.
And Rev. Jen's show of short, eclectic six minute open mike sets could not have been better either, Faceboy's storytelling is engaging, Katrin is lovely, the Manson Family Singers are heart-warmingly demented, and so on.  And our MC, the Reverend herself, is a vision of other worldly (more of a space-age middle earth) beauty and quick witted brilliance.

I love Mo's - either the bar for a drink, the cramped dining room for something tasty, or the performances spaces for off-beat shows.

Mo's is great. At last nite's Anti-Slam, even the barmaid got up on stage and did a set. (She was really good -- and damn cute.) For such a classy joint (top of the Borsht Belt quality), it's amazing how down-to-earth and accomadating they are for Rev. Jen's Art Stars.

Going, Going Gone! Another great Lower East Side venue bites the dust.
