Cyclists dodging barricades along West Street coming out of Battery Park can finally see a park emerging from the perpetual construction that marks the southern most leg of Hudson River Park. From Battery Place to Chambers Street, the park doesn't actually run along the river. Instead it slips between Batter Park City and Downtown. Since they opened the bike path, it's been little more than a strip of asphalt likened to a freeway access road to Route 9A. But now one can see an open area developing at the foot of the park, next to the Ritz Carlton. Finally, pedestrians, joggers, dog walkers and stroller pushers will have an alternative to sharing a five foot wide path with cyclists. A section opposite Rector Street, above West Thames Street (called West Thames Park) includes a dog run, community gardens and a basketball court. From there the bikeway runs between the World Financial Center and World Trade Center site, ball fields and Stuyvesant High School before reaching the river front that gives the park its name.
