I had the pleasure of celebrating "Feast of St. Joey" with my daughter this past May 19 in the East Village. The celebration of the late Joey Ramone's 55th birthday was alloted all the pomp and circumstance deserving of a cultural visionary. We were especially honored to help carry a giglio of Joey from Tompklns Square Park through the hallowed streets (St. Marks Place, The Bowery) to a potluck celebration was held at CB's 313 Gallery and offshoot multimedia venue of the legendary CBGBs. The event included music by the Hungry March Band, and open mike renditions of Ramones classics. If you can imagine what a marching band playing Ramones covers in a small venue must sound like, you have a clue of what kind of day it was. And in the process, they raised money for the Joey Ramone Foundation for Lymphoma Research. Please keep an eye out for future Hungry March events, including the Mermaid Parade - Sat. June 24 - Coney Island. (photo of the Joey Ramone giglio by Fred Askew.)
