I'm pretty sure they serve beer here...

Pros: New York feeling; Independent movies
Cons: Small-ish screens

I could be wrong, but if that's not enough to tempt you, the Angelika is the best place to go for underground/unusual independent films. I saw "Supersize Me" here before it blew up (excuse the pun) and cried over "Before Sunset" with my mom. The whole experience of seeing a movie has a real New York feel -- it's a landmark! I don't think you can ever go wrong even picking a film you've never heard of.

Another cool thing about this theater is the rumbling of the N/R subway periodically during the film. Can't get more New York than that!

And just an FYI they do NOT serve alcohol here.
