League Fridays
Author Talk: Anne Pasternak, Hjalti Karlsson and Jan Wilker
Creative Time: The Book
Friday, June 1, 6:30 p.m.
The Urban Center
457 Madison Avenue
New York City
Creative Time president and artistic director Anne Pasternak will
discuss the design process of Creative Time: The Book, a richly
photographed celebration and record of the art and artists from the
public art organization’s first thirty-three years. Joining the
discussion will be the book’s designers Hjalti Karlsson and Jan Wilker
of karlssonwilker inc. Pasternak, Karlsson, and Wilker will discuss the
challenges of spotlighting thirty-three years of experimental art in
only a few hundred pages and will provide a behind the scenes look at
the creative process between writers, editors, and book designers as
idea becomes page. In particular, the three will consider the “Urban
Visual Recording Machine,” a Creative Time organized event and design
tool, which generates a unique cover for every book created in the
print run.

In conjunction with the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival
Charlie Ahearn: Wild Style:The Sampler
In 1982, a small independent movie written, produced, and directed by
Charlie Ahearn was released, first in Germany, Japan, and Cannes, then
finally in Times Square. Wild Style, the first film to unite the
underground urban art forms of nascent hip-hop culture—DJing, MCing,
b-boying, and graff writing— was filmed on location in the South Bronx
without permits or pretensions. Some twenty-five years after its
release, Wild Style is truly a classic, having inspired countless
artists, musicians, and writers with its unforgettable scenes starring
the era’s most memorable personalities.
Artist’s Reception: Friday, June 22, 2007, 6-9pm. Music by the
legendary DJ Disco Wiz. Drinks courtesy of Brooklyn Brewery. A
screening of the film will follow the launch party at the nearby
Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park as part of the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival.

Neke Carson and Michael Wiener Present:
Is a concert by a pianist-songwriter, just that. Or a
hidden language, sublimated and disguised as familiar
culture. like so much language, body and otherwise,
forced to reside in feelings and epiphanies.
Obliterating the obvious and conjuring a place and
mood, composer/pianist/songwriter Steven Lynch's Gershwin Hotel salon
performance for May, will unfold.
Tuesday, May 29 8:00PM 10$
7 East 27th Street, between Fifth and Madison Aves.
Steven is a tempestuous and highly inventive young pianist and
composer, straddling classical, avant and pop realms, who plays in
floods of emotion, amid bursts of inspired wit, sung lyric, buoyant
patter, a unique and potent artist in the making. He will be joined,
specifically preceded by, as a special treat, our very own Neke Carson,
who, among his many virtuosic artistic hats, is a freewheelin',
infectious improv jazz pianist. an intimate and joyous evening afoot,
don't miss it!

Wipe That Clock Off Your Face
by Brian Belott
Book Launch
Thursday, May 24, 2007, 5-7 PM
Printed Matter is proud to present a book launch for Wipe That Clock
Off Your Face by Brian Belott (PictureBox). Please join us on Thursday,
May 24, from 5-7 PM, to celebrate this premiere publication with the
artist, who will be on hand to sign copies.
Printed Matter is located at 195 Tenth Avenue (between 21st and 22nd Streets).
Brian Belott's Wipe That Clock Off Your Face is a compendium of all his
disparate artistic practices--including collage, drawing, found
photography, and sound mixing. The publication also comes with an
original CD/DVD that offers the artist's acclaimed Found Images, a
digital slideshow of over 2000 photos with an exclusive full-length
soundtrack of original sound collages. Assemblage is a hallmark of the
artist, who uses cast-off and neglected ephemera such as magazines,
text books, and found photos.

For the exhibition “Suitcases from Berlin” renowned artists of
different disciplines fill their suitcases with contents of their own
choice. They all have one thing in common: their creativity centre is
Berlin. Thus the artists do not only allow individual insights into the
city, they also give a snapshot and a cross section of contemporary
Berlin creativity. Just how much creativity fits into a suitcase is
proven by the shooting stars of Berlin’s architectural scene, Graft,
who created a big buzz with their design for the art gallery on the
Berlin Schlossplatz, the castle square; Werner Aisslinger, the only
German represented at the MoMA with his own design chair;
internationally renowned Berliners include DJ Paul van Dyk and the
Illustrator Olaf Hajek, Fashion Designer Michael Michalsky and the
publishing house Gestalten Berlin, Product Designers like Mykita and
Zeha as well as the fashion labels Bless and Kaviar Gauche and the band
MIA.
With their suitcases, the artists travel to the kick-off of the
exhibition in New York on May 17, to show their personal “Berlin
calling cards”. The exhibition will be shown on the 22nd floor of the M
Project Gallery, 32 Avenue of the Americas, NY 10013. Its the old
AT&T building close to Canal Street!
Exhibition “Suitcases from Berlin”:
May 17, 2007:
3 p.m. – 6 p.m. Press Reception & Opening in the presence of Klaus Wowereit (by invitation only)
9 p.m. – 1 a.m. Private Berlin Party (by invitation only)

GELITIN
?The Dig Cunt
?everybody is welcome, even the ones who are not welcome?
May 7–13?
Coney Island
The four-man artist collective hailing from Austria dig and refill a
giant hole on Coney Islands’ beach each day for 7 days in this
durational performance piece. As the artists describe it, ‘We will dig
a hole in the sand, seven hours of digging, and in the evening close it
again and hop on top of the sand of the closed hole to make the ground
sound again. Tired and without arms, we will take the train back to
Manhattan, to get some rest for the next day. The next day, we will
take the train again to Coney Island and dig a hole and then close it
again.”

CORY McABEE
Famed songwriter, filmmaker and actor is back at the Gershwin. He is
none other than the brilliant, incendiary frontman of the noted avant
garde/performance-show/rock-spectacular Billy Nayer Show, and
responsible for one of the most beloved American cult films of the past
decade, multi-festival awardwinner The American Astronaut. He will be
singing and playing original tunes with only his guitar and a music
stand, deviously and gleefully tearing at/out your heartstrings with
his haunting and unsettling, yet irresistibly endearing songs of lost
innocence and obsessive love. He has never been bolder.

3 May – 23 June 2007 Opening Reception
Thursday, 3 May, 6-8 PM
Lehmann Maupin Gallery will present the first New York solo exhibition

with cartoonish, anime-like two- and three-dimensional representations
of joyful adolescents. For this exhibition, the gallery will be filled
with large-scale, intricate paintings and sculptures, the largest of
which will be an imagined environment within the oversized head of one
of the artist’s euphoric girls.
