Join us for an evening of drinks and a live performance by post-folk band Lewis & Clarke in the Museum’s Cafe 2. Twin brothers and artistic collaborators Gert and Uwe Tobias (German, b. Romania, 1973) have drawn on such diverse sources as popular culture, traditional Eastern European folk art, and movements like Constructivism to create a body of work that is both playful and haunting. Guests are also invited to a private viewing of the newly installed Contemporary Galleries. As part of Beautiful/Decay?s ongoing effort to showcase cutting edge media, ideas and creative expressions, B/D is proud to present Vis/Ed, an innovative foray into current discourse surrounding progressive and experimental new media today.
Beautiful/Decay has invited three of the brightest creative minds from the design and marketing world to speak: Jonathan Notaro from Brand New School, Josh Rubin from Cool Hunting and Doug Jaeger from The Happy Corp.
Both Brand New School and The Happy Corp will exhibit carefully curated 30 minute presentations of their own work, as well as motion graphics, animation, commercials or video art pieces that serve as inspiration or points of reference.
Cool Hunting will be presenting a selection of weekly in-house documentaries and video pieces featured on their website.
Shown in conjunction with one another, these unique video selections give a rare look into the sources that stimulate each company's creative thought process. By opening a critical dialogue and engaging viewers, Vis/Ed seeks to provide insight into the moving images role in today's cultural landscape.

Paris is Burning
More than once in the documentary Paris Is Burning, director Jennie Livingston takes her cameras to the streets of midtown Manhattan, where ordinary-looking people shop, eat, walk, and talk. She then returns to the basement gymnasiums where her film's subjects dwell, performing for one another in elaborate drag balls. For the subset of the New York gay community depicted in Paris Is Burning, "drag" doesn't mean sequins and feather boas. Their balls have categories like "military," "executive," and "schoolboy." The idea is for the ball-walkers—mostly black, all gay—to look as real as possible. At a glance, most don't look too different from nighttime TV soap stars, fashion models, or the casual Manhattanites above. And as the movie plays on, it gets harder to separate how people look from who they are.

Panel Discussion
RoseLee Goldberg, founder/director of PERFORMA, a non-profit interdisciplinary arts organization, is moderating this panel discussion with three internationally acclaimed performance artists: Marina Abramovic, a pioneer in the medium since the 1970s; Italian artist Vanessa Beecroft, who is best known for her “living pictures” of naked women and whose work is currently featured in a group show at PS1; and New York based photographer Babette Mangolte, renowned for her documentations of live performances. The panelists will explore photography that has been utilized in performance, evolved out of performance, and has been of performance since the 1960s.
Inspiring this panel discussion, PERFORMA07, the second biennial of new visual art performance, will take place in New York City November 1-20, 2007. It will bring together more than twenty of the city's leading cultural institutions to present live work in all disciplines by visual artists from around the world.

The Miami-based TM Sisters (Tasha and Monica López de Victoria) fuse elements of video and performance art with interactive video game technology. For Performa07, the artists will present their work Things Will End Before They Start. Using a play of innovative postures and expressions against a digitally simulated backdrop, the performance encourages interaction with the audience through the release of emotional and spiritual energy.
The TM Sisters’ practice embraces a do-it-yourself ethic, reflecting their roots in previous independent endeavors such as throwing concerts, creating fanzines, and sewing clothing. Home schooled together as children in Florida, the sisters were raised around intense psychological and spiritual discussions regarding behavior, relationships, and truth.
