~Love & War: The Weaponized Woman~
A SYMPOSIUM
Saturday, September 9, 2006
10:00am - 4:00pm
Modern fashion is often inspired by what might be called the discourse
of silk and steel. As designers seek to express both sensuality and
power, they draw on two important sources of inspiration: lingerie and
armor. This program will explore historical and contemporary
issues of armor and intimate apparel in fashion.
9:30am – 10:30am Check-in, Registration, and Coffee
10:30am – 12:00pm
• Dr. Valerie Steele, “Love & War: The Weaponized Woman”
• Boudicca, A conversation
• Jean Yu, A conversation
12:00pm – 1:30pm Lunch Break
1:30pm – 4:00pm
• Jeffrey Forgeng, "Designer Steel: Armor as Fashion in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe”
• Nora Heimann, “Fashioning Joan of Arc”
• Ruel A. Macaraeg, “Dressed to Kill: Toward a Theory of Fashion in Arms and Armor”
• Tanya Marcuse, “Undergarments and Armor”
Katie Murphy Amphitheatre
Fashion Institute of Technology, D-Building
NW Corner of Seventh Avenue and 27th Street
$30, free to all students with valid ID, FIT staff and faculty
This is a pay-at-the-door event. No pre-registrations available.
Please visit The Museum at FIT website for speaker information.
oan of Arc is an unlikely fashion icon, but designers today are
increasingly channeling the spirit of warrior women. Love and War: The
Weaponized Woman, a visually stunning and intellectually daring
exhibition takes an unprecedented look at the influence of armor and
other military styles on fashion. But it’s not all chain mail and
camouflage. As designers seek to express sensuality, as well as power,
they also reference lingerie.
“If lingerie is like soft skin, armor is a hard exoskeleton,” said Dr.
Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of The Museum at FIT.
“Lingerie symbolizes nakedness, intimacy and seduction, while armor is
associated with authority, protection and discipline.” Different
designers have, of course, focused on different aspects of this theme.
Jean Paul Gaultier designed a camouflage ballgown for the haute
couture, while Thierry Mugler envisioned sexy robots with hard,
metallic bodies. The British design team Boudicca creates styles that
evoke transgressive warrior women, and Junya Watanabe channels chic
soldier boys. Both Narciso Rodriquez and Alexander McQueen have
juxtaposed silk with chain mail. The list goes on…
The exhibition is organized by Dr. Valerie Steele; Patricia Mears,
research curator; Fred Dennis, associate curator of costume; and Clare
Sauro, assistant curator of accessories.

Rude crew,
Summer's end is coming on, and with it the final installment of the
2006 Rude x PUMA summer series. To close things out we’ve enlisted a
selector who has been at the core of Tokyo's vibrant underground music
scene since the halcyon days of the early nineties. Toshio Matsuura,
founding member of United Future Organization, is as much a cultural
curator as he is a dj, arranging tours in Japan for the likes of Gilles
Peterson, Bugz in The Attic and Sa-Ra, while maintaining a full
schedule of international dj dates and remix work. Toshio joins Karl
Injex and Tyler Askew on August 22 for an evening of urban futurism
with a heavy Latin touch.
This also marks the official release date for J Dilla's final
masterwork "The Shining". We're proud to celebrate the occasion with a
limited quantity of full-length cds for our folks, courtesy of BBE and
the J Dilla Foundation. Get down early for yours, and give a pound to
our good brothers from Jazzy Sport, as they deliver the goods in the
upstairs lounge.
$7 with RSVP / $10 Door. Open Bar 9pm–10pm.

Monday marks the 3rd anniversary of the big blackout of 2003, when New
Yorkers spent dark days one of two ways: drinking in the street, or
drinking in a bar. Since the NYPD doesn't accept nostalgia as an excuse
for public intox, celebrate by joining in Monday night's Blackout NYC.
Ostensibly organized to raise awareness about energy conservation,
BNYC's really promoting alcohol consumption: participating bars
throughout Downtown will slash drink prices and, for historical
accuracy, douse their electric lights. To keep you from tripping over a
chair and suing, the bars will provide luminescence with candles,
flashlights, and rags dipped in whale tallow. As for your booze
savings, you can use it to replace the food that's been rotting in your
refrigerator since August 14, 2003.
Because too much authenticity would be sweaty, these bars will be
cranking their ACs. So get comfortable and share stories of that
magical time: the places where you found refuge, the strange people you
met, and your frenzied, Paul Revere-like sprint down Broadway shrieking
about terrorists.

Please join authors Bjorn Turoque and Dan Crane for an air guitar lesson, demonstration and reading from the book:
Monday, August 14th -- Reading at 7pm!
Book Soup
8818 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90069
**AIREOKE After Party at Key Club (The Plush Room-downstairs)**
NOTE - Admission is FREE with the secret password: Airness
9039 Sunset Boulevard
8pm
"A thirtysomething identity crisis can take many forms; Dan Crane's
involved a jumpsuit, alcohol, and simulated six-string action to ''Rock
You Like a Hurricane.'' He chronicles his obsessive three-year
adventure on the competitive air-guitar circuit as the
Nietzsche-quoting Björn Türoque in amusing detail in To Air Is Human —
from breaking an air string to hitting on air groupies — while seeking
meaning in a farcical art form (''It was...the manifestation of
nothing, rendered visible''). Devil horns for this reductive takedown
of L.A.: ''They got the fake t--s, the fake smiles, and they've even
got fake air guitars.' "
--Entertainment Weekly, July 28 '06
"An absurd yet contemplative chronicle that will charm anyone that
believes in rocking hard with a guitar—or with nothing at all."

The event below is the follow-up to last weekend's epic,
One Night of Fire. Expect all the feverish excitement
of the street party mixed with ample liquor, beats and
beautiful moments that make our wild dreams vivid.
Below is the party you love, because you love danger.
I (heart) DANGER
A 12 hour exploration of art,
indecency and indelicate ideas.
Details: http://www.thedanger.com/iheartdanger
This Saturday, August 5th
9pm through 9am
@ 3rd Ward, 195 Morgan Ave.
East Williamsburg / Bushwick Brooklyn
Take the L train to Morgan Ave. walk 4 blocks North
These nights are about waking the wild inside you. Our
best ideas are the dangerous ones; those brief brilliant
moments that excite our souls and make the burning world
feel possible. This is how we save ourselves: 20,000 sqft
of danger art, stiltwalkers, dancers and dj's, bubble domes,
rooftop villages, liquor and ice-cream and the pleasures we
deserve in these nights of wild fire.
These are things we should not do...
The story of Danger will be told by performance,
participatory projection and mesmerizing music through a
half dozen areas of divergent delights. These are
dangerous moments: Akim Funk Buddha leads an operatic
performance of tabla and body-balancing across the gardens
of good & evil, The Madagascar Institute educates on
home-made pyrotechnics, AdHoc Arts teaches you screen
printing and poster creation, Action/Direction presents
spontaneous feats of the fantastic and Emergency Arts
tempts you with liquor and ice-cream.
This is what it is to be alive...
In the room of Glass:
Old school, afro house, hip-hop, and drum & bass on the
tightest sound system in Brooklyn featuring:
DB (founder: Breakbeat Science), Jesse Mann (No Selector),
dj Winter (SisterNYC), dj fflood (transdubmassiv.com),
Been Jammin' (Gnomes), Vocals by Rhiannon (TheDanger), and
video projections by Benno Klandt featuring images from
last weekend's One Night of Fire.
In the room of Dark:
The best of minimal techno and low-down-dirty beats on the
now infamous twelve point surround sound system featuring:
Mathew Dear (Ghostly : Detriot), eVa (Loft-n-Space), Wolf
Lamb (WolfLambMusic.com) and Spinoza (Beyond Events :
TheBunker)
On the Wide-Open Rooftop:
Join Image Node on the roof with live mixed video by The
Housewives' Guide To Anatomy and other VJs, mindblowing
light art, and Space Station Prog an inflatable
wonderland. Ambient and downtempo performances by Sean K
(Image Node), Skillcrane (Image Node), and Ezekiel Honig
(Microcosm, Anticipate).
In the courtyard:
Bar-Q-Que beer and live rabid rock starts at 9pm and
continues through midnight featuring local Bushwick bands
and late-night blue-grass players.
Proceeds from this event benefit the artists, organizers
and musicians who made One Night of Fire possible as well
as Burning Man projects by TheDanger, Wolf Lamb and
ImageNode.
This is our last event of the summer.
Next fall, TheDanger gets loud.
