PAPERMAG's Picks for the Week:
THURSDAY, JAN. 26
This ain't your forefather's pre-deluvian garden. Dutch artist Ruud Van Empel manipulates painterly effects in digital media with his "Perfection / Imperfection" series. The colorful series balances humanism and mysticism through the confrontational, digitally altered eyes of African children and naked babies. Stefan Stux Gallery, 530 W. 25th St., (212) 352-1600. Opening reception 6-8 p.m. Free. Through February 25.
FRIDAY, JAN 27
It all changed for us Sunday, January 22nd. The news was posted at 8:07 a.m. EST on cnn.com, the only safe time for us to download porn without our roommates seeing. The news was a shock: a whale had died on the Thames. Its obituary: "Official: 5-ton mammal was convulsing before death." The horror, the horror! Luckily, we have a convenient outlet for our new-found activism, before we get bored of these over-sized, graceful, probably pretty smelly creatures. Greenpeace is organizing house parties throughout the United States tonight in order to protest the vicious killing of whales (particularly that perpetrated by Gorton's, purveyor of delicious fish sticks). Learn about our sumptuous genetic neighbors and receive a free Greenpeace DVD and party kit. Find your local whale-watching house party by visiting http://partylaunch.com/greenpeace/.
SATURDAY, JAN. 28
Noisy-noise Brooklyn band Black Dice's 2005 album, "Broken Ear Record," had everybody wondering why their synthy, static-drenched, clatter-bang abrasiveness had melded into, gasp, something slightly more accessible and melodic? But then people remembered creative bands often "change" when they put out new albums and everything was okay. Crazy, right? The BD dudes play tonight with fellow New Yorkers Gang Gang Dance and Bill Cosby and His White Pudding Pops. The Syrup Room, 100 Ingraham St., Williamsburg, Brooklyn. 8 p.m. $10.
/>SUNDAY, JAN. 29
Laurence Sterne's "The Life and Times of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman" just might be the best 18th century, postmodern novel ever. But, really, it's the only 18th century postmodern novel we've ever read, so we don't really know what we're talking about. "A Cock and Bull Story," starring Steve Coogan and Gillian Anderson, takes the same digressive, self-referential route as the novel, making it a movie about making a movie of "Tristram Shandy" with Coogan playing himself, as well as Tristram and Tristram's father. We can't wait to loudly throw around the term "meta-comedy" as we're filing out of the Angelika. Call 777-FILM for showtimes and theaters.
MONDAY, JAN. 30
If anyone saw Deerhoof at Northsix in September, they might have heard some girl yell an uncomfortably infantilizing shrill, "she's so cute!" at lead singer Satomi Matsuzaki during their set. Idiot-face who yelled that: don't ever, ever, do that again, or, sit this show out. Otherwise there's going to be a rumble on Delancey tonight. Think we're joking? We're polishing our super-cute, Hello Kitty brass knuckles right now. Deerhoof play with the Starter Set, Le Ton Mite and L'ocelle. Bowery Ballroom, 6 Delancey St., (212) 253-5111. 8 p.m. $13.
TUESDAY, JAN. 31
Because she's such a lovely singer, we're willing to overlook the fact that Judy Collins won a Grammy in 1975 for her rendition of Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns." Any levelheaded person knows that clowns should never be sent in, but it was the '70s, and Stephen King's "It" hadn't been made yet. Judy appears at the Strand tonight, sans cll, clllo, clowns, to read from her new book "Morning Noon and Night: Living the Creative Life." Do your hippie mother proud and stay for the Q&A and performance following the reading. The Strand Bookstore, 828 Broadway, (212) 473-1452. 6:30 p.m. Free.
WEDNESDAY, FEB. 1
Opening tonight at the Bronx's Longwood Art Gallery, "Do You Think I'm Disco?" examines the influence of club culture on America in the post liberation movements of the '60s and '70s. The exhibit, which features artists like "Funky Cold Medina" sculptor Karlos Carcamo and collage artist Edwina White, combines photography, painting, mixed media, sculpture and performance to capture an artistic era bubbling over with urban, aerosol can-influence. Longwood Art Gallery, 450 Grand Concourse at 149th St., Bronx, (718) 401-7866. 5-9 p.m. Free. Through March 18.

You've heard rumblings of something new opening. You may have glimpsed the mildly-insane Dutch designer, Marcel Wanders, coming in and out of an undisclosed location on the Lower East Side.
The question on everyone's mind: what is it?
The answer is the Hotel on Rivington's new invitation-only lounge, which opened last night at a selectively-hyped opening party. Thor finally unveiled the product of many months of tight-lipped effort: behind a nondescript door next to the hotel is a narrow tunnel leading to a small lounge with walls covered in giant white pebbles and masses of Swarovski crystals underneath a glass-top bar. Private alcoves are the way to go here, where you can order Veuve by the half-bottle and food from the restaurant (tip: it's only available if you ask). The atmosphere is relaxed and low-profile and the "VIP" feel ends at the door.
It's a prime place for a nightcap if you're in the neighborhood on a date or seeking something new on a Friday night.
As far as entry goes if you don't have a "membership" key, here is the best of the lines we heard at last night's opening: "We're friends of Marcel's in from the Netherlands."
What a coincidence—us too.

THURSDAY, JAN. 19
Gay porn icon Peter Berlin was quite the man about New York City-town in the '70s. Not only was Berlin successfully rocking a Dutch-boy 'do without looking like a total pumpkin pie-haircutted freak, he was also attracting the attention of Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe and Tom of Findland with his stellar steaminess. Relive Berlin's heyday at his "Low Couture" fashion show, as some of his real-deal get ups get strutted down the runway at tonight's Distortion Disko. Duvet, 45 W. 21st St., (212) 989-2121. 11 p.m. $10.
FRIDAY, JAN. 20
Hot tubs are awesome because they are easy to blame for embarrassing behavior. Steely Dan's in the CD player? "The hot tub made me do it." Burning a little Nag Champa to "just relax, and talk?" Actually, just kidding, we would never do that, even if there were an awesome HT involved. Let's hope that nothing like that happens tonight, either, when Michael Showalter ("The Baxter," "Stella," "Wet Hot American Summer," "The State") stops by variety show Hot Tub to chat with hosts Kristen Schaal and Kurt Braunohler. The Pit, 154 W. 29th St., (212) 563-7488. 9:30 p.m. $8.
SATURDAY, JAN. 21
Oh Lars, how your films make us want to die a little! For those of you who are currently feeling like "giving up on thinking things could be better," the IFC Center has put together a weeklong marathon of Lars Van Trier films just for you. Everyone else should stay home. Tonight's installment features two behind-the-scenes documentaries, "Von Trier's 100 Eyes" and "Dogville Confessions," about the making of his feel good laugh-factories "Dancer in the Dark" and "Dogville." IFC Center, 323 Ave. of the Americas, (212) 954-7771. 12 a.m. $10.75.
SUNDAY, JAN. 22
2005 will forever be known as the year the music mash-up died (see mashuptown.com for some horrifying examples). Store mash-ups, on the other hand, could become a dominating force in '06. Screaming Mimi's and Other Music cut themselves up to bring you a clothing/music sale to end all others. And really, would you expect anyone else be on the frontwave of this new trend? Both New York institutions are slashing their prices to agree with even the most cost-conscious consumer. Don't worry though, just in case this latest mash-up fad doesn't catch on, Botanica will be offering drink specials. Those, as we all know, never go out of style. Bar Botanica, 47 Houston St., (212) 677-6464. 1-7 p.m.
MONDAY, JAN. 23
Let's be honest: Paul Huston made the right decision, choosing to adopt the moniker Prince Paul when he entered the rap game. But what nom de guerre graces his driver's license? Does he go with Prince or Huston? Or maybe Prince Paul Huston? Actually, given that he's a born and bred New Yorker, he probably doesn't even have a driver's license. But somehow, whether it be by plane, train or automobile, the Prince will make an appearance on the wheels of steel at APT tonight part of "The Monday Night Ill-Out." Old friend DJ Avee and special guest Drex of Black Sheep assist. APT, 419 W. 13th St., (212) 414-4245. 10 p.m. $5.
TUESDAY, JAN. 24
Over Vanessa Beecroft's extensive career, the controversial contemporary artist has produced over 50 works, most of which feature attractive women in varying states of undress. Her exhibitions, which are numbered consecutively starting with one (to reflect the continuous nature of her art), reference themes such as beauty, femininity and grace. Apparently, this evening, Beecroft will be speaking "candidly" about her career. We hope this means she will be naked. Pratt Institute, 200 Willoughby Ave., Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, (718) 636-3422. 12:30-1:30 p.m. Free.
WEDNESDAY, JAN. 25
A beautiful Parisian (Melody Nelson) and an Irishman (Eamon Harkin) team up to throw the night's biggest new party (Calling All Kids) in the lovely and ethnically diverse Lower East Side. Ah, only in New York. Well, actually that's not true. C.A.K. is an ambitious trans-Atlantic endeavor with a sister party in England. If you're feeling real adventurous after the Sapphire shebang, jump on a Thursday morning jet bound for Great Britain. It gets a wee bit complicated with the time change, but we're pretty sure you can make it in time for the second round of C.A.K. at Catch on Kingsland Road Shoreditch. Finding the place is up to you. Sapphire, 249 Eldridge St., (212) 777-5153. 10 p.m. Free.

*THE BUNKER 3 YEAR ANNIVERSARY*
Special Guest:
Frivolous (Karloff, Background, Proptronix | Montreal) live pa
As a school teacher, it seemed easiest to link the unconventional
behavior of Daniel Gardner to a learning disability; prooving to
be the first in a series of failed attempts to categorize this
undefinable young artist. Grades were always mediocre at best for
the young suburban Vancouverite, until one semester a mysterious
new course emerged into a normally less than progressive
curriculum; Electronic Music Composition. Suddenly discovered
were honor roll grades, and a means to merge a captive young mind
with over a decade of communist-style classical piano training.
In 1996, won over by unified dance floors and the Detroit sound,
the 16 year old Frivolous engages in a long term love affair with
the loop and takes his first weekly residency at a downtown
Vancouver afterhours. After two successfully directionless years
in electronics and then design, and after dabbling with some
white label releases, Daniel decides to put his pride aside and
send out a demo. A CD of incomplete works were sent out as an
experiment to 5 of the most technologically innovative 12" labels
in Germany and received back were 3 requests to release the
material. "I told Andy [Vaz] that the work wasn't finished, and
the day I received his reply was the day that the test pressings
arrived for the Crankkongestion EP (Background Records), it's
just been a chain reaction since then." Today, after a long
evolution in his sound, Daniel's recording alter-ego Frivolous
captures a romanticly influenced montage of the most cutting edge
production techniques with an old soul mentality. Alongside his
still rather bizarre performances, is the incorporation of
classic instruments and vocals into an environment built on
experiments with glitchy cut-up funk and found sound. We've been
told that Frivulous's live set is a very unique not to be missed
show, and we're psyched to celebrate our 3 year anniversary with
him.

The Fashion of Architecture
Wednesday, 1/11/2006, 7:30–9:30pm
The Fashion of Architecture: CONSTRUCTING the Architecture of Fashion Exhibition Opening
Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place
CONSTRUCTING the Architecture of Fashion
Galleries: Judith and Walter Hunt Gallery, Mezzanine Gallery, Kohn Pedersen Fox Gallery, HLW Gallery, South Gallery
Architecture is making its presence felt in fashion as the pliable metals, membrane structures, lightweight glasses and flexible plastics used in building construction are creeping on to the catwalks. At the same time, architects and interior designers are borrowing the techniques of pleating and draping from traditional tailoring to design buildings that are interactive, inflatable, and even portable. Works by practitioners such as Zaha Hadid, Winka Dubbeldam, Shigeru Ban, Kivi Sotamaa, David Adjaye, Block Architecture, 6a Architects, Lars Spuybroek, Stuart Veech and Meejin Yoon are showcased alongside architectonic apparel from fashion mavericks such as Martin Margiela, Hussein Chalayan, Yoshiki Hishinuma, Yeohlee, Pia Myrvold, Yohji Yamamoto, Boudicca, Eley Kishimoto, Kei Kagami, Michiko Koshino, Stéphanie Coudert, Simon Thorogood, Nicola de Main, and Arkadius. The exhibition features a special installation from Paris-based artist Lucy Orta.

Date: Monday, January 9th
Time: 6:00pm
Location: Grey Art Gallery, 100 Washington Square East
Cost: Free
Co-organized by NYU’s Grey Art Gallery and Fales Library, The Downtown Show will be the first definitive survey of the art and culture produced in Downtown New York during the volatile 10-year period from 1974 to 1984. Emerging in the aftermath of the Summer of Love and coming to a close with the re-election of Ronald Reagan, the Downtown scene attracted artists, musicians, performers, filmmakers, writers, and others who could afford the then-low rents of Lower East Side tenements and SoHo lofts. Influenced by the Beats and the New York School painters as well as by hippies, Marxists, and anarchists, Downtown artists shared similar attitudes toward the production and possibilities of art. The Downtown Show features approximately 200 paintings, sculptures, drawings, graffiti, videos, and photographs as well as over 100 items from Fales Library, New York University’s rare book and manuscript collection, which is the largest repository of materials?—including books, photographs, videos, printed journals, and ephemera?—relating to the Downtown New York scene.
Like Dada and Pop, Downtown art pushed the limits of artistic categories: visual artists were also writers, writers developed performance pieces, performers incorporated videos into their work, and everyone was in a band. Instead of rejecting traditional forms, Downtown artists and writers worked to undermine from within the conventional structures of artistic media and the culture that had grown up around them.
Clearly, the impetus for this endeavor is not ours alone—it is in the air. In 2002, Julie Ault’s Alternative Art, New York, 1965–1985 was published. The following year, Artforum produced a specially packaged, two-issue volume on the 1980s that, not surprisingly, focused on the more commercially successful artists. And, of course, this year, Dan Cameron’s show, East Village USA, opened in the New Museum’s temporary space in Chelsea. What substantially differentiates The Downtown Show is its focus on the New York art scene’s shift from SoHo to the East Village and the substantial holdings drawn from the Downtown Collection at NYU’s Fales Library.
The Downtown Show will highlight the various artistic scenes that coexisted downtown and situate them within larger social and historical contexts. Curated by Carlo McCormick, the exhibition will explore minimalist and techno music, postmodern dance, experimental film and video, and performance art presented through documents, photographs, video footage, and film, creating a vibrant picture of a radically new, subversive, and postmodern approach to art and life.
The exhibition will travel to the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from May 20 to September 3, 2006, and then to the Austin Museum of Art, Texas from November 11 to January 28, 2007. The presentation of The Downtown Show at the Grey Art Gallery is made possible in part bythe Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, Philip Aarons and Shelley Fox Aarons, M.D., The Buhl Foundation, the New York University Humanities Council, and the Abby Weed Grey Trust. Public programs are supported by the Grey’s Inter/National Council.

In her debut exhibition at Robert Mann Gallery, Second Nature, Mary Mattingly looks at the distant future of the human race. After the fall of post-industrial civilization, nomads wear their homes on their backs like snails, using patched-together machines to gather resources from the ravaged environment. Forced to be self-sufficient, this new breed of human is detached from its fellow wanderers, isolated in austere but beautiful landscapes, preoccupied with the need for survival. Mattingly tempers her bleak outlook with a caustic sense of humor, making signposts for industrial conglomerates one of the few remaining traces of 20th-century culture.
Mattingly combines traditional photography with subtle computer enhancement to create backdrops for her unfolding narrative. She sews the costumes, designs the devices, and poses the characters in each scene. Second Nature is utterly compelling; Mattingly suggests an unnervingly believable endpoint for humanity's reckless consumption of land and natural resources.
Mary Mattingly's work has been exhibited internationally. She is the recipient of a Yale School of Art Fellowship, a Scope Artist Grant, and an Opal Filteau Photography Scholarship. She has been published in Photo District News, The Photo Review, Photograph Quarterly, and Archis Magazine.

dining, drinking, and shooting will occur tomorrow night at the brooklyn vs. bush bluescreen studio. 111 court st. #3L 718 596-0879
unlike "Tales of the New Depression" and "Cat Haus," Brooklyn vs. Bush shoots actually start on time. so 7:30 is a great time to do some eating, and 7:45 is a great time to do some hard drinking -- which is our substitues for actual acting ability : )
last week we shot the first installment of the Bush 'n Jesus show, and two episodes of "Spy Catchers." This week we are finally shooting Beat the Press, some whiney morrissey songs, some mobster stuff (bring guns if you got 'em) and more anti police spying stuff, as well as a bunch of music. and a jeff gannon dance number.
7:30 pm, i'm making chicken, bring some pot-luck or some drinks if you like. and if you have a police spy friend you want to bring along, we could use one to out this week. also: don't wear any blue! hope you can make it!
p.s. we may do a frozen submarine sketch where a ww2 sub gets unfrozen and returns to america to discover secret police and torture are now American things instead of something America fights. so if you have any dark turtlenecks or non-blue submarine crew looking things (shark gun? periscope?) bring 'em along!
Cat Haus and the Brooklyn vs. Bush Comedy Hour
Watch Brooklyn VS. Bush online at www.cathaustv.net, and on television friday nights in manhattan at 7pm on channel 56, and in brooklyn monday nights at 11:30pm. time warner ch. 56 Cablevision ch 69
