Great attraction--Bad directions!
Pros: Very unique exhibits not seen anywhere else; very serene atmosphere and location
Cons: Distance from midtown
The Cloisters is something I've wanted to visit for years and I finally had the pleasure of travelling to NYC and seeing it last week, and was not disappointed. HOWEVER, beware of the directions in this site, re: the subway posted with the map. DO NOT take the #1 train to 191st as stated in the directions. It will dump you in a neighborhood miles from your final destination, and in a very uncomfortable neighborhood for me at that. You want to take the A train to 190th or, better yet, the city bus. The bus will let you off right at the door to the museum. It's a longer ride, but felt a lot safer to me and to my fellow traveler, and allowed us to see more of the city.
