I stumbled across Ushiwakamaru, tonight, more because it's near my school than by any clear design--and was absolutely blown out of the water by how good the fish is, here. It's hands down the best sushi I've had in NYC and is actually comparable to what you might find in Japan. The decor is nothing to speak of, but the food and service cannot be improved upon. It's a bit more expensive than its near neighbor, Tomoe, another favorite of mine--but I think the fish, here, is even better--and importantly for an impatient person like me, there aren't (yet) the insanely long lines to get in. I went on a Thursday night around 9:30 p.m.. The place was relatively full, but not packed.

There's no "must have" dish; just ask the sushi chefs what fish are good that day.
