Very few individuals can say they had a lasting impact on hip-hop music, Africa Bambaataa can say this plus a whole lot more. Since his days of deejaying in the South Bronx and turning his Black Spades gang into the Zulu Nation, Bambaataa is one of the last few practitioners of the hip-hop art form. On January 3rd at Le Poisson Rouge, you can see the master performer for yourself live. Bambaataa is still active as ever and was nominated for induction into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Tickets can be purchased through the LPR website.

Greg Allman, the keyboardist and lead vocalist for Southern Rock champs the Allman Brothers, returns to NYC a few months before the annual March runs the band does each year at the Beacon Theatre. He brings his solo act to the Blender Theater at Gramercy on Friday January 2nd and Saturday January 3rd. Though Greg is getting up there in age, he still puts on a great show and for any fans of the Allman Brothers these two shows will fill that urge. You can buy tickets for both shows right here.

Sometimes the Blue Note schedule can be a really intriguing line-up. For New Year’s Eve, the club has booked light-jazz champ Chris Botti, who I have had the opportunity of seeing a few times. But how can you follow up Botti? Why, with jazz-funk machine, drummer Adam Deitch. Deitch has performed with the Average White Band as well as with guitarist John Scofield and brings a mastery to the drum set that is heard very rarely these days. Either way, if you like light jazz or hip-hop, jazz-funk, the Blue Note has put together the perfect show for both genres. You can read more about the show here.

I remember growing up as a kid and my dad played Neil Young records to the point of nausea. But man did those records grow on me and I developed a huge respect for the former CSNY singer. Neil has been rocking hard for over forty years and his current tour stops in at Madison Square Garden tonight and tomorrow. You can buy your tickets right here at NYC.com and go rock yourself into a state of enlightenment with Neil Young.

The Wu-Tang Clan changed the face of hip-hop forever in 1993 with their release Enter the 36 Chambers. Since then, the group members have released acclaimed solo albums, formed successful side ventures, and branched out into every facet of the entertainment industry. They reunite on Tuesday December 23rd at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Though they will be without fan favorite Old Dirty Bastard, this show will be one of most live hip-hop events for the close of 2008. We have tickets right here at NYC.com.

Hip-hop hasn’t been the same since Peanut Butter Wolf founded Stones Throw Records in the 1990s. The label has exposed the talents of super producers Madlib, the late great J Dilla, and others. Peanut Butter Wolf brings his deejay set to Manhattan’s Knitting Factory, which will relocate to Brooklyn in the new year. Tickets are $20 and any true hip-hop head will love his set-he mixes all different kinds of music from the 1960s and on.

For fans of turntablism, it doesn’t get much better than the X-Ecutioners. On Wednesday, December 10th the New York natives bring their crazy mix of technical mastery to the Knitting Factory. The core members are DJ Rob Swift, Mista Sinista, Total Eclipse, and Roc Raida and they will definitely not fail in entertaining you—and more importantly will blow your mind with things you have never seen a deejay do before. My friends performed with Rob Swift last weekend at the Rose in Brooklyn and he’s one of the nicest entertainers you’ll meet. Tickets for the show can be purchased at The Knitting Factory's website.

Very few musicians have had has long and illustrious as a career as drummer Roy Haynes'. Since his days of drumming for saxophonist Lester Young in the 1940s to his days of playing with jazz icon John Coltrane in the 1960s, he has maintained an active career with his own group. Now in his early 80s, Haynes still swings as hard as ever with his current quintet comprised of saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, pianist Martin Bejerano, and bassist David Wong. They’ll be doing a five night run at Birdland running tomorrow through Saturday. More information on the show and Roy Haynes can be found at Birdland's website.

Known for lacing the beat with crazy P-funk samples, EPMD (Erick and Parrish Making Dollars) aka Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith have been making heads bop since the late 1980s. Though they fell off until 1997, the group has been performing around the last few months and they bring their show to Santos Party House in downtown Manhattan. Word from some of my friends in the recording industry is that they have split from long-time friend and collaborator DJ Scratch, so their show might be missing the added spark that Scratch brought but should still be worth checking out. Hopefully the three have ironed out their differences and he’ll be on the ones and twos. Check out the ticket prices and show time at their website.
