Festival of the Pointing Fingers 2006

Finger Pointing should become not only a national sport, but also an international one. It seems that fingers are pointing all around, so much so that if we follow the pointing fingers, we will find they are all pointed at us. And if these fingers were loaded, we'd all be dead.

RELAX! IT'S AN ELECTION YEAR!

Here are some Local, National & International Finger Points so disturbing that they are almost comical:

1. Toussaint of the TWU is pointing his self-righteous finger at his competitors for Kingship of the TWU, claiming that their "dissent" is the reason the TWU has no contract (that sounds so much like a Bush-Cheney argument, it's scary).

2. Pirro points her manicured finger at Cuomo, accusing him of "leaking" the fact that she tried to have the former police commisioner secretly record her ex-husband's conversations (which sounds so much like Nixon, I'm waiting for Hudson-gate).

3. Bloomberg is pointing the trigger-finger at neighboring states for gun deaths in NYC - he has a valid point on this index tip.

4. Bush-Cheney continue to point fingers at Democrats for inhibiting the War on Terror (despite the fact that the Repubs have a majroty in both Houses and all the courts), which of course has been the White House Whine pairing for the Crow they've had to eat.

5. Rice points her crooked index at Clinton for exaggertaing things - which is really sad, since in her interview with Katie Kouric she drew a parallel between the Civil Rights movements and the War on Terror. Nauseating. I'd like to hear what she has to say about Malcolm X and others.

6. Musharaf and Karzi point at each other all day long across their shared border, neither of them willing to admit that there is a deep cultural divide in the mountains of Bora Bora, and it is the ethnos "Pashtu" whose ire we all feel now.

7. The Pope is pointing fingers at History for brutality- that is one wide-sweeping finger point whose impact might certainly be greater than that of any such point thus far this year.

8. Bush points his Finger of Democracy at Dictators, claiming they are keeping the seed of Democracy from sprouting - of course that finger only points at "oily dictators" and not "terror-unfriendly dictators".

9. Chavez points his Exorcist Digit at Bush, which would be funny if it weren't a) close to true and b) a sign that Latin America is slipping ever farther away from North America, and protends destablization. Brazil, keep on eye on your sugar cane.

10. Bush points his unquavering index finger at anyone who diagrees with him, stating that "dissent" is the reason we have terror in the first place. According to his logic, the only good kind of a democracy is one in which absolute power is the index finger of one man.

Bush Uses September 11th and the Prisoner Parade to Score Big Wins for the Republicans

With the "Republicans Must Win No Matter the Cost" PR machine in full throttle, we now see the plan clearly llaid out by Karl Rove and Cheney:

1. Deflect criticism of war in Iraq be labelling dissenters "fascists"
2. Label all Democrats "supporters of Islamo-fascists"
3. Rally the Converative religious vote by convincing them that the End Times are near
4. Rally the moderates by convincing them that an attack is imminent
5. Parade the "high-value" terrorists in front of the camera RIGHT BEFORE the elections - you've been holding on to them for just this photo-op moment
6. Splinter the Congress by asking for legislation that is clearly anti-constitutional  - amend the damn thing so that the Right will always have the Might
7. Play up the prisoners and Sept 11th so that you can ramp up patriotism and deflect criticism about the dismal state of fiscal affairs
8. Attack Bill Clinton in the Press - everyone still loves him, damn it and he doesn't deserve it!
9. Use rhetoric that is purposefully confusing or misleading so that no one knows what you really mean
10. Continue to keep the White House on Lock Down - remember, no real authoritarian state ever lets the People know what is really going on

The sad thing is that with the all the right pieces in place to have the current administration ousted, the Left will inevitably lose because of its own inertia... I see nothing going on out there except poo-poohing, which gets us nowhere.

We should all be concerned about the blatant increase in Executive power, ad hominem attacks against dissenters, and the well-crafted creating of an enemy within - all harbingers of the authoritarian state to come.

It matters not to Rove and CHeney what is constitutional, what is fair play and what is the truth - all that matters is that their party remain in power and have access to all the monies that power allows.
