Cru - Where was the Sommelier???

Pros: Extensive and varied wine list, atmosphere
Cons: No Sommelier on site, rude and unknowledgable staff, food not up to expectations

Cru - as in wine portfolio - as in over 65,000 bottles with one heavy leather bound book for reds and another for whites.  I was really looking forward to this very hyped-up, wine-oriented, fine dining experience I had heard so much about. I hate to say, I was not impressed.  Yes, the wine list is extensive, however the sommelier who is responsible for it was not on site and our waiter knew nothing about the overwhelming list, so therefore could make no recommendations. Basically, he relied on the pairings for our tasting menu.  The food was above average, but nothing near what I expected. I did enjoy the black bass with steamed shitake mushrooms and also the Papardelle ragu of gallina.
What really disappointed me was the behavior of the wait-staff.  Talk about unprofessional! There were bus-boys and waiters throwing things at each other, boxing with each other and generally being very loud all around our table.  It was nowhere near closing time - this is supposed to be a 3 star restaurant (as rated by New York Magazine)? The staff at McDonald's is more refined at times.
I do recommend trying it, as it just could have been an off-night for them.  But I just have to say, with a wine list that extensive, (and fairly well priced), it would have been nice to have someone fully knowledgeable there to steer us in a new direction that perhaps we'd never thought about, instead of leaving us to wade through a book of wines that probably included many hidden gems we may never know we missed.
