same ol' St. Pat's nonsense

Every year, it seems, there is much nonsense in the run-up to the St. Patrick's Day parade. I don't mean the green bagels and green beer (thank goodness you can't dye a Guinness). I mean the crap concerning whether or not firefighters can wear green berets, and also to what extent homosexuals are going to be ostracized from the parade. This year, the nonsense has reached a crescendo. The Archdiocese, barely willing to confront its own hypocrisy on pedophilia, has granted an indulgence for those wishing to eat corned beef. After all, St. Patrick is the patron saint of the Archdiocese and it happens to be a Friday during Lent. So hey, isn't that great news? So go ahead and eat some corned beef.
This year, the City Council speaker is an out and proud lesbian, Christine Quinn. Of course she's invited; the Ancient Order of Hibernians, those elder wizards who control this event wouldn't dare forbid her from marching. (Of course, grand old queen Ed Koch used to march every year, but he apparently won't stand to be outed until he's on his deathbed.) Quinn, who's been arrested in previous years for showing her opposition to the annual verbot on gay groups marching, has no intention of marching, since those groups are still forbidden.
You know, this American concept of Catholicism and Saint Patrick's Day really isn't very tolerant, is it? Anyone out there celebrated in Dublin before? They are certainly a more enlightened and more liberal bunch. And they know how to party.
