Canal Street

4.5

highly photogenic
A great place to take photos, to people watch, and to shop for bargains. Highly recommended! Try to walk a full two miles of Canal Street to get a clear picture of everything going on.

Staten Island Ferry

best free deal in NYC
OF all the free attractions in NYC, the Staten Island Ferry is my favorite. You can't go wrong: there are new terminals on the Manhattan side and Staten Island side; it's a quick boat ride with spectacular views of Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty; you can take all the pictures you want; and you don't need to reserve. You just show up.

world-class bridge worth a visit
You gotta walk over this bridge at least once in your life. You'll meet people from all over, natives and tourists alike. It is a gorgeous bridge truly appreciated only on foot. So just do it! It's a free and great way to see lower Manhattan.

the Dolan clan's stadium
You hear a lot of hype about this place, it's the allegedly World's Favorite Stadium, blah blah blah. Go see for yourself--there's nothing special about it.

back and better than ever
The WFC took a pounding on September 11, 2001, and looked frightfully sad afterwards, with broken glass everywhere and its arcade empty. Now it's back and improved, with more stores and restaurants, and it's a great place to visit in summer or in winter alike.

best tour in NYC!
With the largest gold repository in the world, the Federal Reserve Bank's vaults are amazing. And the tour is incredible. You can reserve tickets via their website. It's the only way to see the inside, and it's really worth it! Free!

Statue of Liberty

once-in-a-lifetime experience
Get on that boat from the Battery to Liberty Island and see the world-famous Statue at least once in your life. Even on a packed boat full of tourists with video cameras, it's still a moving experience. Too bad you can't walk up the narrow winding staircases to the crown any more, but the experience is still great.

The High Line

a gem to be restored
You need your imagination right now to envision what an elevated park 30 feet above street level will ultimately look like, but it will be unique in all of America. Running north-south though Chelsea, this former railroad line has been derelict for decades, and making progress required an inordinate amount of red tape and bureaucratic hurdles to be overcome. But having seen it from above, I can tell you it will be the talk of the town when completed.

phenomenal!
Who would have thought a bunch of derelict piers and infamous waterfront could become so beautiful? Each season the construction proceeds it looks better, and right now it is magnificent.

Central Park

the granddaddy of them all
Central Park is an extraordinary public space, used by tens of thousands of New Yorkers and tourists weekly. From the Christo "Gates" to the free Shakespeare in summer, from winter ice skating to summerstage, there is always something going on in this amazing place. Tip: the northern part is seldom visited.
