  perfect panini
I'm pretty fussy about Italian food, and the Vesuvio special, with cappicola, soppressata, prosciutto, mozzarella, tomato & olive spread on foccacia was one of the best I ever ate. Cappuccino was also perfect, just the right amount of espresso and foam. We also tried a spinach salad with goat cheese, which was presented with the cheese piped onto crostini. The food gets high marks. The service is very informal. We didn't try any of the desserts in the display case but they looked great. Seems as though a lot of Soho regulars really like this place.

  soooo wants to be British
Let's face it; Chelsea Market isn't Britain, and neither is Nicole Farhi's restaurant 202 British. The menu has ample selections, but the service is awful. You sometimes wonder if the wait staff has ever tried what you want to order, because they are befuddled by questions. I know it's a relatively new place, but hello? You can train your employees, can't you? Stick to the simplest things, and don't complicate your orders by making additional requests. Be happy to be served. You could always get up and try on clothes while you're waiting, I guess....

  still trendy and chic
Your experience at Cafeteria depends entirely on the time of day you go and the mood of your server. While the servers are usually upbeat, if you get one who is having a bad day or busy, forget about having a great experience. Breakfasts are delicious, although if you arrive too early you'll have to smell and hear the floors being polished. Lunch is usually in order, though arrive early before the crowd shows up. Dinner is boisterous, regardless of the time, and late-night-to-6-a.m. on the weekends is a total crap shoot, as the drunk patrons make the mood of the place. Having said all this, I have never had a bad meal. Usually about $20 to $30 a person. It's fun to people watch and to kick b...

  crowd pleaser
Really great new American food, no entrees over $20, and everything comes out just right. We had the Spice Crusted Pork Rib Chop and Peppered Newport Steak last time, and they are great choices. The salads are fine, as is the Maine Crab Cake. Nightly Home Plate specials are always good. Never had lunch or brunch here, but sure they are fine (though probably a wait on Sundays?). Anyhow, we have never been disappointed here.

  totally cool
I love the look of everything here, all the furniture seems to be specially designed. The service is informal, but the food is anything but. Preparations are exacting and precise. For example, a plate of oysters was presented in a perfect square, with the oysters pounded flat. A great appetizer! Also the foie gras was super. I particularly like the meat entrees, although the duck breast and ocean trout are also great. But the desserts are what I love most, whether the parsnip cake with coconut cream cheese sorbet, or the milk chocolate-hazelnut parfait, or the lemon curd. Make absolutely certain you save enough room for multiple desserts!
