123 year energy use record

Breaking the 13,000 megawatt mark: "This is the first time we have ever gone over 13,000 in the 123-year history of Con Edison," said utility spokesman Mike Clendenin.

American unveils new JFK terminal

So they spent $1.1 billion, have more than 100 ticket counters, 36 gates, and can process up to nearly 1,800 people per hour. Does that mean they will actually become friendly? No. Does that mean they will actually depart or arrive on time? No. Does that actually mean you will enjoy flying AA? No. They will still suck, regardless of their new terminal. Buy hey, at least some of their planes have some legroom. Har har...what a sad joke. Domo-Kun hasn't forgotten how their economy-class flights to Europe were about as glamourous as flying Lao Aviation, and how a first-class flight to the Caribbean actually had worse food than Air China. Oh yeah, all out of that now-formerly perpetually-under-renovation terminal.

Prime target in TriBeCa?

80,000 gallons of diesel fuel onsite at a telecom hotel (which Domo-Kun won't name here but you can figure out easily enough via news reports). Today's papers follow-up on recent reports that neighborhood residents are in an uproar over this issue.
Your intrepid Domo-Kun was invited to a rooftop garden across the street from this building, and asked the residents what they are doing to fight it. "There is nothing we can do," I was told. It is a rather frightening prospect, Domo-Kun must admit, to live in such proximity to a major target and realize how very dangerous this situation really is. Then again, we would all cry if our data hosting services lost our valuable data in a power outage, so obviously these telecom hotels have to go somewhere.

2 Are Charged With Murder in iPod Theft

Two Brooklyn teenagers were arrested July 3 on charges that they robbed and killed a 15-year-old boy in the Farragut neighborhood when they stole his friend's iPod, the police said. And today's NYT reports that Steve Jobs himself phoned the father of the deceased.

Real (not fake) Coach ring busted

Shoppers buying fancy Coach goods on one Midtown sidewalk were getting a real steal.

While many street vendors around 58th Street and Lexington Avenue sell cheap knockoffs of high-end products, prosecutors say Avani Mora and Nakim Williams were selling real Coach products — $11,000 worth.

The pair were busted and charged with selling goods without a license in December, a few days before Christmas.

A trademark expert later determined the merchandise they were selling — including 30 wristlets, 23 cellphone cases, 19 wallets, 18 pairs of women's gloves, 16 change purses, 10 mini-pouches, five key chains, two belts, a handbag and a day planner — was the real thing.

But the way they got the items was not, authorities said.

Investigators for the Manhattan district attorney later discovered that Mora was an associate manager of a Coach outlet store in upstate Orange County, and that the store had recently suffered "a significant amount of inventory shrinkage," prosecutors said.

Investigators executed a search warrant on Mora's car and found another treasure trove of Coach products, authorities said.

It included 39 wrist bags, 13 cellphone cases, 12 wallets and two purses, according to authorities.

In all, prosecutors say, she had $11,600 worth of goods, but had sold very little before she was arrested.

Cops did not know how much she was charging, but noted that customers did a lot better than they would at a store.

Mora, 21, pleaded guilty immediately after being indicted yesterday.

She's expected to get five years probation when she's sentenced later this year.

Fake Nike ring busted

COPS TRACK $5M NIKE-FAKE RING
Four men driving a truck loaded with counterfeit Nike sneakers were arrested by cops last night — but not before capping the bust by uncovering the hidden Queens warehouse where they stored the $5 million worth of fake shoes, authorities said. Capt. Chris Monahan, who heads the NYPD's Organized Crime Investigation Division, said the seized pseudo-Nikes filled seven rooms at a storage warehouse in Long Island City — enough shoes to fill four tractor-trailer containers. "Nike said this is the biggest counterfeit seizure of their goods in North American history," Monahan said. Police arrested Lee Jeong, 44; Khodor Kaawar, 40; Mohamad Ayoub, 44; and Julio Guerrero, 50, and charged them with trademark counterfeiting. Kaawar and Ayoub were the ringleaders, cops said. The men are expected to be arraigned today in Queens Criminal Court. The massive bust began just before noon yesterday when organized crime cops were on patrol in Long Island City, an area of warehouses and hidden corners that is popular with counterfeiters. In front of 45-55 Pearson St., the officers spotted the four men loading a van and a truck with what appeared to be Nike sneakers. But the officers were suspicious and pulled over the vehicles just two blocks away, police said. While the men were being questioned at the 108th Precinct station house, Nike officials were brought in to inspect the goods. Nike quickly confirmed the sneakers in the truck and van were fakes, cops said. Last night, cops got a warrant to search the ring's seven rooms at Citiwide Storage and found the fake sneakers. "The sneakers are fairly decent if you just walk around with them, but if you run, they'll fall apart," said Detective Ramon Rivera, a member of the organized crime unit. "The glue is really cheap." He added that the shoeboxes were good enough to fool small sneaker retailers.(NYP)
