food off the truck

I love those refrigerated boxes of macrobiotic noodles from Queens, generally found in health stores and at Gourmet Garage. There are several different types, and the macro-udon is my favorite. So last week I went to Gourmet Garage, and surprisingly, they were out. Too bad for Domo-Kun. (No sense crying over a missing product when there is so much suffering and starvation in this world, right?) As I walked away on that rainy day (we have had the second wettest October on record, but that's for a different blogger to discuss), I saw the Macobiotic Noodle Truck pulling up to the Gourmet Garage. "Well," thought I, "I am going to have a nice talk with the driver." So I did. And he was so nice and friendly, he gave me a complimentary box of noodles--they were spinach macrobiotic noodles, which I had never tried. And they were great.
OK so why am I telling you this? Flash forward a week and a day, to yesterday, a rainy Saturday. I Domo-Kun had done my shopping at another Gourmet Garage this week, and got spicy hummus (very tasty). But I forgot the pita bread!
As I was walking home later from the gym, I saw the pita truck driving up to a Greek restaurant, and once again: "Well," thought I, "I am going to have a nice talk with the driver." After he delivered the two big plastic trays of pita, I walked up to him with a dollar rolled up in my hand and begged him to sell me one package of pita bread. "What kind you want?" he asked. I was debating not white or wheat, but whether one dollar was generous enough to offer. Anyhow this nice pita truck man gave me not one but two packages for one dollar--twelve loaves in all. I think you will not find such a deal even in Cairo or Casablanca, but I don't know.
Anyhow that's my story about buying food off the truck, something you think maybe only happens in the Casbah. But it happened here!
