Michael Jordon's the Steak House is a Slam Dunk !
Pros: Great Food, Great Service, Great Atmosphere
Cons: The restaurant isn't in my home town of Chicago!
While in New York City my wife and I had the distinct pleasure of eating at this fine dining establishment. Michael Jordon's is located on the upper level of Grand Central Station in an open air atmosphere that over looks the station below with the magnificent ceiling of the station over head. We had eight PM reservations and arrive about forty - five minutes early. After checking in with the maitr'd we were offered to choices 1. we could wait at the bar and someone would come for us at eight PM or 2. we could go in to the next room where the wine cellar is and have a cocktail or two served at a table. We chose the latter. Our waiter for cocktails was very attentive and we were enjoying ourselves so much we didn't realize it was eight PM until our waiter approached us and told us our table was ready. We were led to our table by our dinner waiter who once again was very attentive. After looking at the menu we decided to start our dinner with a shared appetizer of the Chilled Shellfish Platter which everyone seemed to be having and just happened to be on special that evening. The platter consisted of six jumbo shrimp, four large crab claws and a small lobster tail split in half, served in a tray of ice with lemon and cocktail sauce. It was to say the least excellant. For our Entree my wife and I both decided on the 22 ounce Ribeye Steak. We asked our waiter about the size of the side dishes and he explained that they are fairly large in portion and that they could be shared and still have some left over at the end of the meal. With that we ordered the Mashed Potato's and the Creamed Spinich. Our dinner arrived in a timely fashion our steaks were done to perfection! We are from Chicago and we know good Beef as well as a Bostonian knows his Seafood; and my wife and I both agreed that not only was the Steak prepared perfectly to our specifications, it was also an excellant, choice piece of meat. The first piece I tasted literally melted in my mouth. and I pointed this out to my wife. The sides were as our waiter had said were large enough for two to share. Our Mashed Potato's were fluffy and firm with just a few lumps in them to make you feel like mom herself had made them. The Creamed Spinich was also excellant. It was not overly creamed but more of a chopped spinich in a light butter sauce. As our waiter indicated to us when dinner was over we had both eaten our fill of the sides and there was plenty left over. Though full I decided to end dinner with a little desert. I ordered a slice of the Key Lime Pie whichwas also excellent though not as large as the other deserts on the menu (Chocolate Cake, Cheese Cake)which I had seen other people ordering. My Key Lime Pie was a normal cut of pie and was creamy consistent and had just the right ammount of tartness that any Key Lime Pie should have. As I said my dessert was of normal size; know that some of the other deserts (Chocolate Cake and Cheese Cake) are huge and can easily be shared by two. My wife and I finished our night off with a cup of coffee which was strong but not bitter a truly good cup of coffee that cleansed the pallet of the taste of the Key Lime Pie. In all our bill with cocktails came to $188.00 before tip. But I found this to be extremely reasonable for a reastaurant in mid-town Manhatten. On a final note if you are going to Michael Jordon's and expect to see a lot of basketball memorabilia you will be disappointed as this is a fine dining establishement and not a sports bar. Also MAKE RESERVATIONS as there is always a crowd.
