According to Andy Warhol theory, perhaps it was foreordained the former Dia: Chelsea would become a Ralph Lauren outpost (entrance foyer seen above), even if only temporarily. Warhol: "When you think about it, department stores are kind of like museums". So it goes at 548 West 22 Street.

The Hudson River, 4:45pm. At this point we observed numerous suitcases and luggage floating by as well as this piece of the airplane. For those of us who witnessed 9/11 from our vantage point in Lower Manhattan, it was an eerie reminder of that horrific day.

The Hudson River, 4:35 pm. The plane was roughly at Houston Street when the NYC.com editorial and photography team arrived at Hudson River Park. The tail was visible as Coast Guard and tugboats followed the plane in choppy waters.

Beginning Monday, visitors previously eligible to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program will now need obtain approval through the USA's Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before traveling. It's a simple and FREE online process. Applications and further information can be found on the ETSA website.
US Homeland Security reminds travelers that unauthorized third parties have established Web sites that charge visitors seeking to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. These businesses and Web sites are not endorsed by, associated with, or affiliated in any way with DHS or the United States Government. Again, the United States Government does not charge a fee to obtain information about, apply for, or obtain a travel authorization through the ESTA™ Web site. Use of a private service to apply for travel authorization via ESTA will not expedite the granting of approval.
The ESTA application Web site is available in 16 languages (Ceština, Dansk, Deutsch, Eesti, English, Español, Français, Íslenska, Italiano, Japanese, Korean, Latviešu, Lietuviu, Magyar, Nederlands, Norsk, Português, Slovencina, Slovenšcina, Suomi & Svenska) and includes a help section that provides additional information for VWP travelers to guide them through the application process. Additional information about ESTA may be found at: http://www.cbp.gov/esta.
As a reminder, countries in the Visa Waiver Program are: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Individuals who already posses a valid B1/B2 or other classification of visa will still be able to travel to the United States on that visa for the purpose it was issued. Individuals traveling on valid visas will not be required to apply for an ESTA.
Finally, each approved ESTA application generally will be valid for a period of two years and allows for multiple visits to the United States within that period without having to apply for another ESTA. Travelers whose ESTA applications are approved, but whose passports will expire in less than two years, will receive an ESTA valid until the passport’s expiration date. So good news: if you will be making multiple trips to the United States, this will eliminate the need to fill out that annoying I-94W form every time you visit! Just keep a record of your ESTA approval number. DHS recommends that travelers print out the ESTA application response in order to maintain a record of their ESTA application number and to have confirmation of their ESTA status. Travel tip: store the ESTA printout with your passport and you'll always know where it is.

Deputy Mayor Patricia Harris says "We want to be the wedding destination of the world,'' and the new 24,000-square-foot marriage bureau at 141 Worth Street, a historic 80-year-old building in lower Manhattan, certainly makes for wonderful wedding ceremonies. With a computerized system that cuts down on lines and waiting times, you'll find that credit cards are now accepted and you can even buy flowers on the spot! Mayor Michael Bloomberg is on track to make NYC America's #1 place to get married: almost 70,000 marriage licenses were issued here in 2008, whereas Las Vegas issued just over 95,000—the lowest number in 15 years. Just consider these terrific improvements:
• 14 computer kiosks for online application processing
• one-stop windows for service instead of multiple windows
• iPod docking stations so you can play your own music for your special ceremony
• large restrooms with vanities and full-length mirrors; refinished and decorated chapel space
• an area to take photos in front of a backdrop of City Hall
• a branch of the City Store selling disposable cameras, film, costume rings, and NYC merchandise—plus the flowers mentioned above.
The wedding chapels feature artwork on loan from the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the City Hall backdrop was supplied by Duggal. Literature in the new Marriage Bureau will be available in English and Spanish. Customers can also speak to clerks in their preferred language using a telephone interpretation system available in 170 languages.
The City’s Marriage Bureau provides marriage licenses, domestic partnership registrations, marriage officiants registrations, copies and amendments of marriage records, certificates of non-impediment, and other services.
The Customer Service Group at the Mayor’s Office of Operations has been working with the City Clerk’s office to enhance the experience for the City’s customers during their visits to the Clerk’s Office. For example, the City Clerk has made comment cards available to capture customer feedback. Also, the City Clerk’s office has created printed materials, available at the information desk, providing customers with necessary information about the process for acquiring services and a map so customers can find services appropriate to them.
Working with the Mayor’s Office of Operations and the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, the City Clerk has trained its front-line staff in customer service practices. To further improve the visitor experience, the Clerk’s Office is employing workers from ReServe, a not-for-profit organization that connects New York City’s retired professionals with civic engagement positions. ReServists will help greet and direct visitors to expedite and improve the process within the facility.
While Manhattan is its most heavily trafficked location, the City Clerk has offices in each borough. The Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island offices have recently received aesthetic and structural enhancements and the staff in those offices will receive customer service training. These offices also now accept credit cards, can receive applications electronically, and access translation services.

You know the drill: remove all tree stands, tinsel, lights, and ornaments before throwing the poor tree at the curb. Don't put it in a plastic bag. Clean, non-bagged Christmas trees left at the curb between Monday, January 5th and Friday, January 16th will be collected, chipped, and made into compost. The compost will be processed and subsequently spread upon parks, ball fields, and community gardens throughout the city.
Even more exciting, the Parks & Recreation Department will be hosting Mulchfest 2009 on Saturday, January 10th and Sunday, January 11th from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. at more than 80 sites throughout the city. Click here to find a park near you. This citywide service allows New Yorkers to drop off their holiday trees at designated parks for mulching and event attendees can pick up free mulch. Remember, all lights, ornaments, and decorations must be removed from the trees prior to drop-off. Want even more information? Dial 311.
