This holiday season, New Yorkers and visitors alike will be able to enjoy the final weeks of the highly acclaimed theanyspacewhatever and Catherine Opie: American Photographer exhibitions during special holiday hours on Wednesday, December 24th (10 AM – 4 PM), Wednesday, December 31st (10 AM – 5 :45 PM) and Thursday, January 1 (11 AM – 6 PM) at the Guggenheim Museum. You can buy your tickets right now at NYC.com and thus avoid the lines when you arrive.
The dynamic exhibition theanywpacewhatever (closing January 7th) brings together a group of 10 contemporary artists who have each chosen to produce a site-specific work (ranging from installation pieces to performances and film programs) creating a series of individual projects that intersect and overlap in the museum’s spiraling rotunda. The artists involved in this large-scale exhibition include Angela Bulloch, Maurizio Cattelan, Liam Gillick, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Douglas Gordon, Carsten Höller, Pierre Huyghe, Jorge Pardo, Philippe Parreno, and Rirkrit Tiravanija.
Also closing on January 7th, Catherine Opie: American Photographer examines Opie’s complex body of photographic work. Adopting such diverse genres as studio portraiture, landscape photography, and urban street photography, the exhibition explores notions of communal, sexual, and cultural identity through significant examples from several of her most important series in a major mid-career survey including Portraits (1993–97); Self-Portraits (1993–2004); Freeways (1994–95); Houses (1995–96); Domestic (1995–98); American Cities (1997–present); Icehouses (2001); Surfers (2003); and In and Around Home (2004–05).

If you're pressed for time, perhaps consider a superlative gift of chocolates from either of the two Max Brenner locations at 841 Broadway and 141 Second Avenue. While you're there, you'll doubtless find something wonderful for yourself, and self-medicating with chocolate during the holiday season is one of nature's best remedies. If you can't get enough chocolate at Max Brenner, then do head a-walking after you visit Max and set forth on our chocolate lover's tour. Walking is a superb way to burn those choco calories.

This sensational gingerbread house created by celebrity chef and owner Kurt Gutenbrunner was featured yesterday on the Today Show. Don't feel like building a massive Victorian gingerbread house yourself? Then head down to his Austrian-themed Blaue Gans restaurant on Duane Street, which makes an excellent and festive choice for a holiday party, a light meal, or just a drink at the bar. Not to mention you can closely examine this enormous gingerbread house with appropriate blue goose peeking down from the top-floor window.

Astounding but true: As gas prices have sunk rapidly across the United States, New York state has the highest prices on average outside of Alaska and Hawaii. Whereas California's Bay Area until recently had the highest prices on average in the continental United States, that dubious distinction now belongs to the City of New York and dozens of counties Upstate. Down the street from our corporate offices this morning we noted with chagrin an astounding $2.89 for self serve, which represents a whopping $1.20 more per gallon than we paid last weekend a few miles away in New Jersey for full serve! We learned via CNNMoney.com that "Gas is now selling below $2 a gallon on average in every state except Alaska, at $2.763 a gallon, Hawaii, at $2.613, and New York, at $2.128, according to AAA. The state of Missouri had the cheapest gas at $1.566." Hence our astonishment at news today that the CEO of Gulf Oil said gas could hit $1 next year: it won't be happening here.

When we're not busy ice skating in Bryant Park or browsing the stacks at the nearby New York Public Library we're hitting the holiday stores at Bryant Park. This year one new arrival stands out, not least given our endless desire for intriguing chocolate. Fortunately, the luxury chocolate brand that has brought a chocolate revolution to Ireland has finally here. With its first store to open in January of 2009, Lily O’Brien's has a temporary shop at the Holiday Stores in Bryant Park, store #F09. The truffles, caramels and the award-winning Honeycomb Crisp definitely stand up. Lily O'Brien's rise to fame is a typical success story: Mary Ann O’Brien started making chocolates in her kitchen in 1992 with two pans and a trusty wooden spoon. The chocolates make great gifts and stocking stuffers—or like us you can just eat them on the spot. Doubtless you’re sure to find something that will fit perfect under the tree. Hours: Mon-Fri 11am-8pm, Sat 10am-9pm, Sun 10am-6pm

Madame Tussauds welcomes a new Cinema 4-D experience: The Polar Express™ 4-D Experience. This unique cinematic experience, which enables guests to smell the aroma of hot chocolate, feel the icy chill of snow brushing past their faces, hear the roar of the locomotive and feel as though they are a passenger aboard the magical Polar Express, costs just $6 for adults and seniors; $5 for children (ages 4 - 12), plus admission to Madame Tussauds. You can buy your tickets to Madame Tussauds right here at NYC.com!
The Polar Express ™ 4-D Experience is based on the film from Warner Bros. He embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. Madame Tussauds’ Cinema 4-D experience brings this holiday classic to life in a full-sensory adventure that is perfect for the entire family.
What's more, on your visit you'll see the festive way that Madame Tussauds New York is celebrating the holiday season. From the street, passersby will be awed by the ten-foot custom-decorated Christmas tree in the front window. Upon entering Madame Tussauds, guests will be greeted at the doorway by two Nutcrackers, unveiling Christmas trees, garland, wreathes, jingle bells and an iconic wax Rockette figure. Children of all ages are also invited to send letters to Santa through Madame Tussauds special Santa Clause mailbox.
