The scene outside the Apple Store SoHo on Prince Street at 8:45 this morning seemed rather deceptive. Only a few eager geeks who will be among the first to purchase the iPhone were camped out along Prince Street.
However, a quick view around the corner revealed that the media—mostly bored TV news crews—outnumbered the hopeful shoppers. Did you wonder what that fellow was reading on his MacBook Pro? It was Guy Debord's Society of the Spectacle. We did not ask if Public Enemy's "Don't Believe the Hype" would be his first song download.
Although Working Assets called for a boycott, urging consumers not to lock themselves a two-year contract with AT&T, that seems overblown. After all, you can actually set up the iPhone as a pre-paid phone in case you have issues with AT&T's lackluster network—frequently criticized for poor data download speeds and dropped calls. Doubtless the geniuses at iFixit will figure out how to unlock it after their iPhone disassembly event. Don't forget, this phone does have a SIM card inside. Heck, you can go Orange when you're in Europe.
UPDATE 9:15 pm EST: The wait was less than four minutes to purchase phones—NYC.com staffers twice went through the line making purchases.
Best overheard comment inside: "I just spent $600 on this phone and you're telling me the f@#$ing call quality sucks?"
Best overheard scene outside, where numerous SUVs were waiting, engines idling, for the drivers to return with the pretty black iPhone boxes: Biker: "Hey you in the BMW, have you heard about global warming?" Blonde in passenger seat: "What's that?" (she then shuts off motor)
Best overheard tech geek moment: "So you're telling me Vodafone and Orange will be offering this in Europe next week, but what does that do for me tonight?"
