An extraordinary development on behalf of this city's millions of pedestrians, businesses that make deliveries by bicycle will be required effective July 26th to institute new steps that will prevent reckless and dangerous deliveries.
How will that happen? First off, every business must display the above poster—which soon will become available in several languages. Second, every delivery person will be required to wear "upper body apparel with the business' name and the operator's identification number. They must also carry and produce, on demand, a numbered ID card with the operator's photo, name, home address and business' name, address and phone number." What can you expect as a result?
• Far fewer delivery bikers charging down sidewalks with hot steaming food.
• Less-frequent pedestrians collisions as delivery riders will be less likely to go through red lights or the wrong way on one-way streets.
• A decrease in rude and abusive behavior by these delivery riders.
Literally everyone has a story of an encounter of a near-miss with a delivery bike rider—many of whom are paid low wages and have little command of the English language. As a result of citizen complaints and little accountability by restaurant owners who claim their delivery personnel are "independent contractors," the City for the first time will implement these long-overdue steps to address overlooked and neglected safety issues. Note that last part: "Businesses must keep a log book of all deliveries to file with the Police Department each year." However, these new regulations unfortunately won't address these delivery people from dumping unwanted menus in your building.
