Astounding but true: As gas prices have sunk rapidly across the United States, New York state has the highest prices on average outside of Alaska and Hawaii. Whereas California's Bay Area until recently had the highest prices on average in the continental United States, that dubious distinction now belongs to the City of New York and dozens of counties Upstate. Down the street from our corporate offices this morning we noted with chagrin an astounding $2.89 for self serve, which represents a whopping $1.20 more per gallon than we paid last weekend a few miles away in New Jersey for full serve! We learned via CNNMoney.com that "Gas is now selling below $2 a gallon on average in every state except Alaska, at $2.763 a gallon, Hawaii, at $2.613, and New York, at $2.128, according to AAA. The state of Missouri had the cheapest gas at $1.566." Hence our astonishment at news today that the CEO of Gulf Oil said gas could hit $1 next year: it won't be happening here.
