Englishwoman in New York who wasn't stung
Pros: Fab food & service
Cons: Space limited
Looking for a great dining experience? Well we found one at Balthazar. The atmosphere was buzzing (late Sunday evening!), the service some of the best we had during our trip, and the quality of food excellent.
Our waiter recommended fantastic wine choices, even for those just wishing to buy a glass rather than a bottle. And as an oyster virgin, he showed me how to eat them without looking like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (I know that was snails, but you get the picture.....).
Main course was imaginative, but not overly fussy. I had the Moules Frites. Fantastic fries - and the mussels were cooked to perfection - none hadn't opened and the broth was just right in consistency and flavour.
Dessert (like we weren't already full) was classic creme brulee. Served in a large but shalllow round dish (the chef must be a mind reader) the ratio of crunch to smooth was much higher than usual - and what a great crust - practically paper thin, but with bucket loads of flavour.
And you know, when you've eaten all that, you can't walk far. Even the cab drivers have figured that out - there was one waiting for us as we rolled out near midnight. What a great experience Balthazar, and thanks.
