Perilla

In:

Restaurants

3.5

  Chicks & Dates
Perilla is one of the many NYC restos that pride themselves on seasonal fare - a good thing to brag about, and made all the easier by the proximity of great producers in the Hudson Valley and on Long Island. The dishes are urban American, with a strong hint of southeast Asia. Also notable are Italian influences (comfort food for New Yorkers) and Mediterranean. (CIA-trained Chef Dieterle has spent much time roaming distant shores & learning about many cuisines.)

Eating at the bar is fun. Order a cocktail and a couple of appetizers. The pea tendrils are a great side dish, as are the edamame falafel.

The crowd is largely female, in pairs and groups, dressed as hip & elegantly as...

Klee Brasserie

In:

Restaurants

3.5

Artful Fare from a Thoughtful Chef
Klee is, in the real sense of the word, a neighborhood brasserie. The crowd is largely local & loyal, and knows Angerer & his cuisine well. In fact, Angerer is a very talented chef who, unlike many of the chefs around town, is actually in the kitchen cooking. And we love him for that.

The food is based on Austrian and central European dishes, but is modern & exuberant. It can be a bit pricey, but the tasting menu is a good value if you really want to explore the depth of the chef's talent.

Following the current trends around town, the menu is seasonal and does feature some local cheeses and other products. Daily specials can be big winners.

The space is nicely appoint...

Industria Argentina

In:

Restaurants

3.2

Industria Argentina - All things Argentinian
Industria Argentina is not your typical Argentinian Steakhouse. In fact, it's not a steakhouse: It is an Ode to Argentina. The decor, the wine list & the menu feature Argentinian products & aesthetics. The bar is roomy, the space light & airy and dressed in welcoming, warm tones.

Chefs Trocca and Machado have a love for all things seasonal, and their wide-ranging culinary experiences and training underscore the nature of Argentinian cuisine. Italian, French & Spanish influences are inherent.

The Prix Fixe lunch is a good deal. Go for the meat dishes & the empanadas. You will not be disappointed.

Tribeca Grill

In:

Restaurants

4

  Jewel of Tribeca
Still hopping after all these years, Tribeca Grill attracts legions of the faithful as well as those recently stumbling upon Tribeca in the hopes of spotting celebrity owner Robert Deniro (or other well-known investors).

But this resto is not just some glitz-box where posers meet to share celeb-spotting stories. Tribeca Grill is destination dining, and boasts one of the city's most notable wine lists, including an impressive collection of Rhone wines. Chef Stephen Lewandowski is among the city's most respected chefs.

Step inside a storied old warehouse building whose industrial feel resonates all the way to the soaring ceilings. The brick and mahogany main dining room evokes the gran...

Dardanel

  Great Turkish cuisine
Don't think of kebabs and hummus. This is a Turkish resto named after the Straits that connect the Aegean and Black Seas. Think fish.

Also are on the menu are some classic Turkish dishes, expertly done: manti (a type of delicate dumpling), lebni (a yogurt dish), stuffed mussels.

Decently priced, nice atmosphere.

The only downside is the view of the pylons at the foot of the 59th street bridge, unless of course you like that kind of Bauhaus POV.

  Italiano!
Lively neighborhood resto with a focus on modern interpretations of classic dishes. The menu is seasonal. Chef Correa is inventive (try the gorgonzola ice cream) and still manages to please the locals. Prix fixe prices are a good deal. The wines are all Italian.

There is a monthly Italian Language & Dinner (Collina Italiana) that meets here.

Rouge Tomate

In:

Restaurants

3.8

  Great Space, good menu
Midtown is not known for its destination dining. But if you find yourself in the area you do have some options.

Rouge Tomate, in the old Copacabana space, is a visual feast. Upstairs, a lounge & bar provide a roomy and not-too-dark area for the modern diner.

Downstairs, a more formal dining room and open kitchen area provide much seating. Maybe too much.

The menu is designed to be healthy, seasonal and delicious. The Rouge Tomate brand prides itself on not adding fats & on balancing the proteins & carbohydrates on the plate.

Try the simple, roasted dishes. They are the best.

  Food, Fun, Mystery
Not your typical Tribeca scene - this place is its own animal. Great bar area, great drink list, great vibe.

The menu exists in pairs: Chinese & Portuguese varieties of the same dish (meatballs, clams, whole fish). Mix & match with your table mates, or hoard your own dishes.

Careful selection can give you a great experience without having to pay a pirate's ransom.

John Dory CLOSED

In:

  A reason not to avoid 14th & 10th
With the John Dory comes a great resto experience: seemingly simple dishes expertly prepared, a lively atmosphere, reasonable prices. Get there early and grab a seat at the bar. Enjoy a great glass of wine or Champagne and a couple of dishes to share. The experience will not break the bank! This is no ho-hum, over-glitzed dining experience. Like the Spotted Pig and the Fatty Crab, this is a resto for those who are in love with food & dining out.

Note: Sommelier David Lynch is on staff.

Sapporo Restaurant

In:

Restaurants

3.5

  Cheap Eats - A Pre-theater Noodle
Japanese-style curry soup, dumplings and rice curry dishes at affordable prices.

Tables are tightly packed, so diners squeeze past each other. Best to eat at the counter if there is a stool open.

Service is polite & quick. Stop in pre-theater for a curry dish & a plate of dumplings. Dinner for two for under 30$.

Popular hang out for those who like the authentic.

Ramen dishes can sometimes be over-cooked - that's probably because some of the cooks are busy ogling the female patrons!
