Chicks & Dates
Pros: location, appetizers, eating at the bar
Cons:
Perilla is one of the many NYC restos that pride themselves on seasonal fare - a good thing to brag about, and made all the easier by the proximity of great producers in the Hudson Valley and on Long Island. The dishes are urban American, with a strong hint of southeast Asia. Also notable are Italian influences (comfort food for New Yorkers) and Mediterranean. (CIA-trained Chef Dieterle has spent much time roaming distant shores & learning about many cuisines.)
Eating at the bar is fun. Order a cocktail and a couple of appetizers. The pea tendrils are a great side dish, as are the edamame falafel.
The crowd is largely female, in pairs and groups, dressed as hip & elegantly as the restaurant is.
Pleasant waitstaff & crowd make this a nice spot for a first date, meeting with friends or taking out of town guests.
