A couple of weeks ago, I reported that Staten Island's renowned and beloved Victory Diner was headed for the recycling heap as reported in the Staten Island Advance. Well, the good news was announced in that same paper of record for the greenest borough that a consortium of civic and business leaders (including the Advance), had come together to rescue the endangered diner and move it to a lovely seaside location on the FDR Boardwalk in the Island's Midland Beach section. Hooray for everyone involved from the BP, and the Advance, Richmond County Savings Bank, the Diner Museum and others --- even the sometime mouthpiece for Staten Island developers, Randy Lee -- who all came together to get this done (or at least started). Everyone except for Linsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie was involved. Now wait, hold your applause, One point I want to share with you is that the article about the resolution credits participants in the Staten Island Advance online forums for coming up with the idea to move the diner to South Beach. From there, the Advance in it's wisdom, instead suggested moving it to Midland Beach, where there aren't any concessions as of yet. Well, that's a great idea, but I do have to point out my own post responding to the Staten Island Advance's Turning Tables blog on July 13, where I wrote "But even better, I like the idea of adding it to the South Beach boardwalk (maybe even better at Midland where there aren't any vendors yet.) It would be one truly authentic Staten Island attraction on the boardwalk." OK, Now you may applaud!! Yep, this is one big shout out to Mr. David Johansen and his New York Dolls for belting out some major tunes under the Cyclone at this year's Siren Festival. The Dolls were in top form singing about monkeys, pills and rock and roll. The thing I love about his rendition of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart" is how he doesn't change the gender, singing "Didn't I make you feeeel like you were the only man?" in his deepest baratone. It was also great to see what all the hype is about NY's own Tamil Tiger, M.I.A., just back in the states after sweating out her visa appliaction. Nothing like anger and stress to bring out the best in an artist. Thumbs down to the usual jerks that show at these events -- borderline child molesters grinding on my daughter (who held her own with a sharpened thumb nail and strategically place button pins sticking off her purse), the crowd surfer who knocked down an unsuspecting concert goer and nearly caused a brawl, and the teen drunk pushing his way to the front, bumming cigs, sips and cash all the while getting his paws on quite a few sweeties. Overall a great night celebrating the final days of Coney as we know it.

Okay, Ronnybrook's new Milk Bar is no Karova -- no Milk Plus, no Milk Plus Dreminol, and no Milk Plus Synthemesc, my droogie friends -- in fact you won't even find alcohol in this bar. And that's just fine. Because what they do serve is the creamiest ice cream west of Ninth Avenue. Deep in the rough-hewn heart of the Chelsea Market, this stylishly retro ice cream parlor blends the freshest natural ingredients with flash-pasteurized dairy products for exceptionally flavorful rich treats. The Milk and Honey blended milk "cocktail" features Hummingbird Ranch Honey, and tangy yogurt that's frothy and delicious. Their "shaken milk cocktails" include a moccachino with heavy cream and a shot of espresso. Come by for breakfast as early as 8:30 a.m. for yogurt with granola, honey and berries or cast iron eggs with asparagus, farmer's cheese and garden herbs. And when the weather cools-down, be sure to stop by for Ronnybrook's seasonal egg nog.

Staten Island's classic Victory Diner is a star of film and TV – it’s seen in “Easy Money” and “The Education of Max Brickford.” But it turns out that Easy Money will be the downfall of this historic 1941 Kullman diner when developer Leonard Tallo demolishes it to built new office space. The diner was also the subject of a painting by artist Tom Chibbarro which is in the collection of the Staten Island Museum, a location for weddings, and a favorite icon of Staten Islanders for decades. It has been visited by Rodney Dangerfield, Richard Dreyfuss, and bank robber Willie Sutton -- but never by Paris Hilton. The story is covered in yesterday’s Staten Island Advance:
Hope vanishes for return of The Victory Dongan Hills site to be transformed into office space Wednesday, July 11, 2007 By KAREN O'SHEA STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The "closed for vacation" sign posted on the door of the Victory Diner in Dongan Hills dangled hope that the silver and blue bullet-shaped restaurant with the red neon sign would reopen. Longtime owner Maria Pappas also clung to that hope -- until her recent decision to retire and enter into a long-term lease with developers who plan to transform the diner into a two-story building with commercial space on the first floor and offices above. Read the full story at SI Live.
Please feel free to discuss this story further on my Yahoo Group: NEW YORK BUILT ENVIRONMENT.

Okay, I told you it would come to this! Yesterday, it was the Vampire Peacock of Tottenville. Today, it's the Agitated Zombie Rooster from the Graveyard. Today's Staten Island Advance reports that cemetery worker R.J. was busy doing his (we can only hope) gruesome duties, when he was brutally attacked by a terror from the grave - rooster-pecked at the ankles. Mr. R.J. then reacted swiftly dispatching the offending zombie fowl by stomping out the tiny terror, possibly saving the entire tri-state region from an onslaught of marauding monster fowl. Old Moravian Cemetery is home to the Vanderbilt Mausoleum and the resting places of many eternal islanders (including my own ancestry -- the Lederman plot -- fifty or so feet from the front gate on your left). Now being home to a vast array of egrets, geese and ducks who bask in the Olmstead-designed ponds, spawning new generations of possessed pigeons and other fearsome fowl out to terrorize our region. The Advance reports that according to Special Agent Sean McCafferty (Yes, X-File fans, Special Agent -- ASPCA) describes the pecking attack thus, "It came after him, it was pecking on his leg. It kept coming at him." Well, thank God that the ASPCA has special agents, and hopefully a whole X-File unit of its own to protect us from this unspeakable feathered threat!

Apparently, Staten Island is being overrun by crazed vampire peacocks, and no one seems to care except one brave young lad on the south shore. The fowl undead was seen stalking a local Burger King restaurant in the Tottenville section, just oozing negativity for everyone to see -- and no one did anything. That is until one brave young Burger King associate took it upon himself to destroy the evil bird. This is how it starts, Tottenville, the southern most point in New York State, gives these demon spawn a toe hold in the Empire State. I'm sure they went unnoticed in New Jersey, where the Jersey Devil has been lurking in the piney muck for hundreds of years, leaving no clue beyond a toxic odor out of the west. But this invasion is different -- this time they've found a way in to New York. And there's more. I'm sure I've seen satanic sparrows on my fence, just mocking my hounds. What's next, ghoulish gulls will follow the wake of the ferrry into the Battery, where that big turkey in the park will become the gobbler from Hades. By then its just too late. Hitchcock, you were right! (photo: global physics.com)
