Cameroon-born Richard Bona has been in high demand since his move to New York City in 1995. He has blessed the stage with the likes of Pat Metheny and Herbie Hancock. Later this month he’ll be performing along side Benin born guitarist Lionel Loueke September 26th and 27th at Jazz at Lincoln Center. If you’re a fan of West African music, these two represent the best. You’ll also hear some jazz and funk coming out of these two and the vocals will also be a big surprise if you’ve never checked out music from this part of the world. They’re playing two sets each night with the first one starting at 7:30 p.m. and the second set at 9:30 in the Allen Room at JALC. For further information on this show visit Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Country legend Willie Nelson returns to NYC on September 25th for an engagement at Radio City Music Hall. Bob Dylan’s famous offspring Jakob Dylan will open up with his backing band, the Gold Mountain Rebels. I saw Willie a few years ago back in my hometown, and even in his old age he still puts on a great show. Tickets range from $44.50 to $80.00, but you can bet the farm that people will pay this much to see a living legend such as Nelson. The show starts at 8:00 p.m. and you can get great seats right here at NYC.com!

For many of us, Wayne Brady has been forever immortalized in his now infamous skit from comedian Dave Chappelle’s show. I was also not aware that Wayne was a singer and on September 11th he’ll be at B.B. King’s to debut songs from his new R&B album. I’m guessing this show should be entertaining and I might even go check it out just to see what this “new” album is all about. Further information for the show can be found at B.B. King's.

Guitarist Bill Frisell and tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano begin a two week engagement at the Village Vanguard this week. Performing alongside legendary drummer Paul Motian, these shows will satisfy your jazz cravings and maybe make you dance as well. For anyone not familiar with the work of Bill Frisell, he has combined bluegrass, jazz, rock, and fusion into one of the most original guitar tones in recent memory. Similarly, Lovano emerged in the 1980s and 1990s with such an original sound that music schools across the country started pumping out little Lovano carbon copies. Rounding out this stellar lineup is Armenian-bred Paul Motian who is best known for his playing with the late great pianist Bill Evans. Sets start at 9:00 and 11:00 p.m. For further information on these artists and the shows, check out www.villagevanguard.com.
