Guest Worker Program and other signs that the end is near

Signs of the Times

1. We are publicly discussing a Guest Worker Program. Such programs do nothing but create two classes of people unequally protected by the law. While immigration policies do need to be re-thought, the answer is not to use Germany as a model.
2. Rove is back in town. Of all the possible survivors, who thought it would this porcine little man? This shows where the President’s priority is: propping up friends and getting rid of detractors.
3. Laura Bush is doing the PR circuit as a Feminist. If anyone ever made a bona fide feminist wince, it is Laura Bush. Tipper Gore, too.
4. McDonald’s is leading the school nutrition programs across the country. How sad that our children get to learn about the food pyramid from Ronald McDonald and the Frito Bandito.
5. Hillary and Rupert dating. This is hard to stomach no matter how you look at it. It seems that nothing good could from this unholy alliance. Let’s wait and see, though. They might actually birth a whole new political party and break up the Washington fun.

All joking aside, these are serious issues with many important things at stake. The link between Guest Worker Programs and anti-Union activity hardly ever comes up in polite conversation. But that is because low-blow news and Fox pseudo-news drown out all other voices. With as many media outlets as there are in the country, why do we get more entertainment news that anything else? It’s McDonald’s nutrition for the mind, body and soul – God help us all!

Bush - Cheney and the End of Democracy in America

Alexis de Tocqueville, in his seminal work, Exploring Democracy in America, made the observation that one of the overriding characteristics of the American people is that they do not like criticism from abroad. Dickens made a similar observation when he was being feted at the grandest of New York’s event (all in his honor) The Boz Ball.

Bush & Cheney have built their whole administration on the notion of giving the finger to all those who would criticize them – Germany, France, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Russia, others….. Worse, they have done the same to voting Americans, and they have further insulted the People by spying on them in the 10-million wiretaps kind of way. Rather than give you the dismissive finger, your Administration has instead given you the electronic equivalent of a proctologic examination.

Now, I am going to criticism the Bush Administration not for being low-brow, which they certainly are (isn’t that right Scooter & Brownie), but rather because they have managed to not only tarnish the reputation of the United States abroad, they have also tarnished the whole concept of Democracy. Yes, it may be a fine and noble idea, but not if it means death, terror and disease. They have now made it achingly clear that they simply don’t care about the abstraction of democracy, but rather about the power and the control of resources that they can take from the export of democracy. If they truly had as their collective goal the elimination of tyranny and the spread of democracy, they would have started a different war elsewhere, and they would have started first by setting up the kinds of community organizations that must necessarily exist before democracy can take root (See De Tocqueville Chapter V Of The Use Which The Americans Make
Of Public Associations In Civil Life

Americans are beginning to realize the swindle of the Bush-Cheney years – but is it too late? Is there redemption?

Tell Rumsfeld to F*****k Off

I wish I had been there, at whatever talk it was, when the CIA analyst asked Rumsfeld why had lied.

The whole world is waiting for a meaningful response, for which we will wait a damn long time.

Here’s what I would like to tell that gas-bag Rumsfeld

1. You were never a good solider and no one liked you when you were hanging out with the Nixon crowd. They all bitched about you behind your back at the Officer’s Club.
2. Your tricky move to send the National Guard Troops to a war zone is now coming back to haunt you – but since you have no soul, you are not scared.
3. Asking the parents and family of soldiers to pay for their body armor and to send them supplemental food is beyond despicable (I guess those Haliburton meals aren’t that great at $7 a pop – not including the 5 figure salaries for the cooks for ‘hazardous duty’).
4. The only way you will be able to raise troops for your Iran invasion plan is “en hablar Espanol” , or expanding the Guest Workers program. Go ask your homeys over in Deutschland about how that works.
5. You may be a big tree, but the People are a small axe.
6. Stop lying! Come right out and tell us about your plan for world domination of all energy supplies and “the natural selection of famine and internecine warfare” in the third world, and of course about how you and Dick conspired to give your golfing and hunting buddies all those billions of dollars of contracts. Just say it, goddamnit.

We know that he lied. We know Cheney lied. We know Bush lied – but darn, his little simian face is just so cute! – so stop talking to us like we are five year olds incapable of understanding irony. We’re not the naïve little youth of the National Socialist Party, looking up at their leaders with clear blue eyes of wonder and admiration. No, we are a jaded crowd of overworked, sleep deprived and underrepresented citizens. We will turn on you without warning.
