Editorial Review
The classic American musical returns to Broadway for the first time in more than 25 years!
The classic story of West Side Story transports the achingly beautiful tale of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the turbulent streets of the Upper West Side in 1950's New York City. Two star-crossed lovers, Tony and Maria, find themselves caught between the rival street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds, the Jets and the Sharks. Their struggle to exist together in a world of violence, hate and prejudice is at the center of one of the most heartbreaking, relevant and innovative musicals ever written.
Directed by Tony Award-winning librettist Arthur Laurents, this new production will feature Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's legendary score, including the classics "Something's Coming," "America," "Tonight," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere," as well as recreate Jerome Robbins' original choreography. The production will also make history as it weaves the Spanish language into the book and lyrics.
Featuring an onstage cast of 37 and 30 musicians in the orchestra, West Side Story opens on Broadway in March of 2009 following an out-of-town engagement at Washington D.C.'s National Theatre beginning this December. Josefina Scaglione will headline as Maria, Matt Cavenaugh plays Tony, Karen Olivo stars as Anita, and Cody Green will be Riff.
