Despite National Guard troops, Amtrak police, NYPD police, and MTA police (did I leave out any other police force?), this station is a nightmare. A warren of byzantine and sprawling underground passageways with poor sightlines, policing it is a thankless task. Walk along any of the platforms and you should worry about how safe you really are. I strongly doubt anyone arriving with an evil intention here would be apprehended before leaving behind an ominous parcel. Sorry to say, this just isn't a safe place under any circumstances.
