I've seen Roerich's paintings here and in Russia, and the more I read about him, the more I think of him a la Madame Blavatsky: a pleasant nut case. The paintings are full of weird symbolism, and most aren't terribly impressive. There is spectacular art, noteworthy art, and average art in this world, and Roerich falls into the latter category. Many of his paintings are pure Himalayan fantasy meet science fiction.
