Editorial Review
One of the more intriguing accomplishments of the Giuliani adminstration was the faithful reconstruction of this once-dying park. Old plans were consulted, and a massive restoration project was undertaken to return this park to its former glory. However, a few odd characteristics stand out; in particular, the gas lamps around a massive fountain. While the facilities are quite good, with benches and tasteful flowers and plants, you just can't help but wonder about 21st-century gas lamps. And the security barriers constructed around City Hall along with the wrought-iron fences aren't exactly in the best taste. While post-9/11 security measures perhaps merit heightened security, it is proof that further walling off the halls of government from the people is not in the best American tradition. Nevertheless, the proximity of this enjoyable and peaceful park to City Hall has restored an element of tranquility to this neighborhood, and provides office workers a nice outdoor place for some rest and recreation. A walking tour of the neighborhood includes the nearby Tweed Court House (now Department of Education) along with City Hall, St. Paul's Chapel, and the World Trade Center area.
